I run Win2K and have ISP through msn. I have a dsl connection throug a Intel 3200 pro/dsl modem. Lately my connection keeps getting lost and most of the time i have to restart my machine just to train my modem again. I've reinstalled the modem drivers and made a new dial up connection, but i'm still getting the same results. i had recently changed the properties of the modem to train only on dial up (not on start up), but things were operating fine like that for awhile. I would love to blame my problem on the service i'm getting, but it seems unlikely because of the fact that my modem seems to be able to reconnect after a reboot. Does anyone have any ideas for this newbie?

I use to have the same problem when I was on DSL, it is usualy the service that drops your connection and rebooting your PC refreshes your connection with the ISP.

Try using the IPCONFIG /RELEASE comand in a dos window and see what you get. If it says your IP has already been released then the service either dropped you or you have a bad modem that keeps dropping you.

Then try using the IPCONFIG /RENEW command and see if you get a new IP address. If it renews then the problem probably lies somewhere in the phone company's lines or service.

When my DSL dropped a lot it was because the service was running on older lines and they upgraded and it started to run smoother.

I switched to cable modem but had a simular problem, squirrels were chewing on the connection box on the pole outside my home.

Are your phone lines burried or above ground? Do you have static on your regular phone line? Can you test your phone line at the phone box in your house, does it contain static at that point? If there is static on your line, then it can be the cause of your dropping and you will need to complain to the phone company. They probably won't care and I'd switch to cable modem if they don't resolve your problem. CJ

Okay, i've tried the IPCONFIG/RELEASE command and this is the message i get..."No operation can be performed on adapter Local Area Connection as this connection has its media/cable disconnected."...now the weird part is that i just tried that as i am connected to the internet right now and i got the same message...so i'm pretty sure the cable is connected. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this newbie...I know the thing that i left out above is that i'm running McAfee VShield and Guardian...but I've given IE and Outlook full access and i still can't get my modem to even train. Any other suggestions or settings for my modem i can try?

here are a couple of events that happened during the day as i was gone and it disconnected....do these help at all?

The connection to MSN2 made by user xxxxxxxx@msndsl.net using device ISDN6-0 was disconnected.

The device, \Device\Scsi\HPT3xxNT1, did not respond within the timeout period.
