This configuration has been working 24/7 for around a year without any problem. It runs Seti when I'm not using it for playing games or editing home-made movies. Last night I was working on my latest home-made movie and everything went fine. The last thing I did was initiate a file transfer from my other PC with the complete DVD image - I was counting on burning that tonight.
This morning, I wanted to check and see if the file transfer has completed correctly, and that is when I found out that the PC had a problem. I could not get the screen to wake up. I tried all the keys on the keyboard, moving the mouse, but no dice. I therefor resolved to submit to the time-honored 3-key stance, but nothing happened. I resorted to the last trick - the reset button. Nothing happened.
I had to unplug the PC from the mains to get it to stop.
Back from work this evening, I plugged it back in and hoped that it might start up again. As I did not sacrifice any chicken, it turned on, and stayed black. No screen, no beeps, no disk revving up, nothing. The DVD blinked a bit, then went silent.
I had to unplug it again. I tried shorting the CMOS pins before plugging in and turning on - same story. I tried removing all IDE cables to see if the PC would boot on a bare configuration, but it didn't.
I am a bit lost now. If the mainboard does not beep and does not go to POST, what can it be ?

Any ideas ?

I would suspect the power supply. If you can try it with a different, known to work one, I would try that. Do all the fans come on when you power up ?(even if they do it could still be bad...

What is the brand of the PSU? If it is "Deer" then get a new one right away. I had 3 computers get fried where I work because of their shoddy crap. They fail "hot" and send the outlet voltage straight through the comp. destroying just about everything! I replaced all the rest of these I could find with Enermax power supplies.

had similar problem, just checked all connections and it booted up again no problems

I think the power supply is all right. The CPU fan turns normally when the PC is turned on. Right now, the only things that are connected to the mainboard are the GeForce, the SB Live and the floppy. That should not prove too difficult for a PSU.
I took out the GeForce and reseated it carefully, but that did not change anything. I didn't waste time doing the same with the sound card - seemed useless.
The fact is, when I turn the PC on, the power LED goes on - and that is it.
What is wierd is that I cannot reset from the button, nor can even turn the PC off from the button.
I guess that means the mainboard is gone. What a bummer.
Oh well, thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm off to buy a new mainboard. And spend 12+ hours reinstalling Windows and all my apps. Another wonderful week-end in perspective.
