hi all

just a quick question i know that whislter was the original name for Windows XP but this happened to me the other day.

I was at a clients home and updated them to WinXP SP1 and i got an error message saying LSass.exe is in use.

I have 2 questions

1. What does the lsass.exe process do.

2. When i rebooted the machine it would not start (i managed later to get it working) but when i went debug mode or last knwon godd hardware it said

Which O/S do you want to load and the option was Whistler Personal. Has the cleints machine got a beta version of XP?

Or did Microsoft ship whistler to start with the and then change the name

Just wondering!!

Any feedback would be appreciated

To answer question #1, the lsass.exe process is the Windows Local Security Authority Server Process. It handles Windows security mechanisms. It verifies the validity of user logons to your computer or server. Technically, the software generates the process that is responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service. 2 things:

1) That copy of XP is probably not legit (probably one of those pirated corporate versions). If so, you should make the call not to continue supporting it until he/she obtains a valid license.

2) Moving on...One of the recent worm/viruses that's been going around infects the PC and corrupts the LSASS.EXE function. Make sure the anitivirus scanner is up-to-date and run a full system scan. There's also a ton of info available on the web including Symantec's website.

Ya that sounds like sassar, the sassar worm conflics with the lsass file and it seems like they werent uptodate on any security patches, Im leaning tors the thought that they have the sassar worm.
