Hi - - I just got today an unexpected gift of XP pro full edition.

I’m currently running the upgrade of XP Home Edition and commonsense tells me to use “My gift”. - - Question is:

What is the best way to go about installing this without losing my files, programs updates etc.

The XP pro disc has SP1a built in.

307229 - Icons, Favorites, E-Mail Messages, and Customization Is Missing After Upgrade to Windows

"a computer preinstalled with an OEM version of XP Home might not upgrade using a retail version of XP Pro upgrade. This is especially true of laptop computers that have a customized OEM version of XP Home installed. In that case, only a clean install will work. Laptop computers require specialized hardware drivers not found in the conventional "retail, upgrade" version of Windows XP."

You can even try dual booting Home with Pro if you want.

Hi Linney - My current home edition is a retail version and the "gift" has been purchased from PC World so that is retail as well. It looks as though I can just "shove it in" as Goatygoat would say. - - You reckon?

I don't know what setup you have onlymel but on a standalone Home PC the extra features of XPpro will be wasted and of little use, you will be "under these circumstances" wasting your time and efforts.
Nice gift all the same!

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

I hear what you are saying Martin. I guess the only advantage is being the fact that it is a full version and not a upgrade like my home edition is. - - I now have to decide whether or not to waste an activation cos once I do that then my home edition becomes redundant. After all, no one else can have it can they? (I had it activated. More money for Bill Gates!!!

With regards to your home edition being reactivated. If it was a full upgrade version (i.e. Brought from a shop and not packaged with a pc (oem version)). Then as long as you sell the cd with all packaging and books etc that came with it originally then yes it can be reactivated. The people buying it will need to ring microsoft when prompted, this is something that has been discussed on her recently.

There are other features that are useful for any pc user who connects to the internet. XP home edition comes as standard with just TCP/IP networking protocols. These are the default for browsing the internet. However some ISP's allow quicker access to their servers using different/more secure/faster protocols.

There are also other features that Pro has over Home, so in my opinion I would upgrade.Check out for more details.

Thanks for the info Greg. Ringing Microsoft from the UK?? Hmmm, I probably have more chance of getting "shit" from a rocking horse. Unless you or any members know of a phone number from the UK. - - Thanks anyway.

Mel.

Whn you attempt to activate windows it allows you to do t via the internet or by phone. If you select the phone option it then asks your for the country you are in. At that point it supplies you with the UK phone number for activations.
