I have just bought a new dual layer DVD burner. I want to make sure everything is installed with the best jumper settings. What are the best settings for my jumpers on my hard drives, DVD burner and DVD player?

My PC specs are

512 Mb RAM

60 GB IDE hard drive
80GB IDE hard drive

DVD player
DVD burner (not yet installed)

Geforce ti4600 graphics card

Soundblaster audigy sound card

IDE1: 60 GB HD -- Master DVD burner -- Slave
IDE2: 80 GB HD -- Master DVD player -- Slave

I would recommend putting the burner on the secondary interface as the master.

IDE1: 60 GB HD -- Master / DVD player -- Slave
IDE2: DVD burner -- Slave / 80 GB HD -- Slave

I have had problems before with a burner with a slave setting, but that may have been an exclusive problem.

Don't worry about it too much, computers today are rock-solid when it comes to burning discs. I've watched movies while a dvd is burning, and there's not the slightest hint of any struggles with the burner.

If I were putting that together, I'd probably set it up like nagornyi recommended; because if you're burning a dvd, likely it'll be either copying another dvd or taking files off the 80gig harddrive.

It depends on how you plan on using your system.

For the fastest transfer from one device to another, place both devices on opposite IDE channels. For example, if you plan on spending most of your time transferring from the 80GB drive to the DVD burner, you might want to consider placing both hard drives on the primary channel while leaving both DVD drives on the primary (the downside is that transfers between hard drives would now be a little slower).

In the end, it's not going to make much difference. If you really care about having the fastest possible configuration, get a PCI IDE controller card for the both DVD drives. That way each device can have its own channel.
