Jpegs won't import 1

Apologies for this, I'm newly registered and this question has probably been asked many times before. I'm using Quark 4.1 and PhotoShop 7. When saving an image as a jpeg, using 'Save as...' in Photoshop and using 'Get Picture...' in Quark, no image is previewed or displayed. Just a white box.
It seems that the only way to import the image is to use 'Save for Web...' and then save it as a jpeg. Is this right? Will that save the image at 72dpi?
I don't have a problem with Tiff's - would you recommend saving as a Tiff over a Jpeg? B-)

when importing the jpeg, does the box appear empty, or does it have a grey box and postscript error displayed in it??

i think that you might be saving the jpeg from photoshop with the preview box unticked - try ticking it

*clutching at straws* - is quark importing the jpeg to the image box, but not putting it on display, ie if you fit to box (Ctrl, Shift + F) it might display your image ???

*personally* i have always saved images as tiff if if you have the option...

:~/ Firstly - wrong version! I'm using Quark 5. And no, no grey box, just completely white. Fit-to-box also does not bring the image into view. Interestingly, all previous jpeg images cannot be imported unless I call them all back into Photoshop and Save for Web.
I'll check out the Preview Box, but I'm pretty sure that is checked. This problem seems to be just with Jpegs; saving as tiff or bmp is not a problem.

Hi there,
Yours seems to ba a rather unusual problem,
You can import JPEG into XPress as well as TIFF.
You do not have to save for web in Photoshop if you need to use the same in Quark for printing.
You try and save the pic. again in Photoshop but with min. 300 dpi and try saving both JPEG and TIFF. I hope you know how to do that in Photoshop.
Then try getting those pictures in quark by get picture, I dont see any reason why the pictures will not come in Quark and they will definitely print good.

another thing that you must note is that there should not be path selected in the JPEG, if yes delete that.
This problem can be cecause of a path in JPEG too. Check about the path in photoshop and if it is there, delete it.

Right, having checked all I can, I've noted the following...

In the 'Get Picture' box in Quark, when I click on a picture that imports OK, I note that:
1. I get a preview.
2. The format is: RGB JPEG
3. The Dimensions of the picture are shown along with the dpi.
4. The Colour Depth is 'True Colour'

With pictures that will not import..
1. There is no Preview image
2. The format is: PICT
3. The Dimensions are 'unkown'
4. The Colour Depth is 'Unkown'

Is this a Photoshop problem? How do I save as RGB JEPEG and not a PICT?

Hopefully you've figured this out Fotoman, and that you have e-mail notification on, because I'm having exactly the same problem you were having and it drives me nuts because all my graphics are saved as these JPGs. The only ones that will import are the versions I made using "save-for-web" and those are too small. Did you figure out a solution, and if so will you please share it with me? Thanks!

Hi Nat,

In answer to your question, No, I haven't sorted it yet.
I am saving pix as .tiff for the time being. Older pix, I am also calling back in Photoshop and re-saving as .tiff as and when they are needed.

I think the problem lies with the Format 'PICT' as mentioned above. Photos with a Format of 'RGB JPEG' import perfectly.

I'm not too bothered as by far the majority of my work is for websites and, as we know, using 'Save for Web...' doesn't produce this problem.

This was driving me nuts until I found out somewhere...

Photoshop 7 (new "feature&quot includes an XML header on JPEG files that makes Quark not recognize them. While technically still within JPEG spec, they don't play well with others.

Solution: set your preferences under "Saving Files" to disable/prompt for previews. Or use "save for web."

fotoman, do you have the jpeg import xtension in your quark xtensions folder? you will not be able to import jpeg format pictures unsless this xtension is active. it may be disabled for some reason or another.

In the Utilities/Xtensions Manager... all XTensions are Enabled. There are some 22 XTensions loaded, however, I cannot see one that refers to JPEGS.

Running a search for files *.xts displays nothing!

Is this known by a different name? Can I import it from somewhere else?

I don't think the JPEG XTension is still used in Quark 5. As far as I know it's now built in, probably to accomodate it's 'web' features.
