Hello,

I have a Windows 2003 server. I run dcpromo to promote the server to a DC, the first DC in the domain/forest. The DNS server was also installed.

I have also a wireless router. This router gives access to the Internet and works like a DHCP server: it gives dynamic IP to the server and to one laptop (I know the IP to the server should be static, but I will change this after). Both, the server and the laptop are assigned an ip address, and both can access to the Internet:

router IP: 192.168.0.1
server IP: 192.168.0.100
laptop IP: 192.168.0.101

The laptop is a Windows 2000 professional. I want to join the laptop to the Domain I crated. However in the network id I always get a message that windows can´t find/access the domain...

I think there is something Í´m not getting in my configuration. How can I solve this? I can ping the win2003 server from the laptop and vice versa, but it seems it can´t find the dns server...

Thank you

The laptop needs to have the IP address of the server as it's preferred DNS server.

pagy is correct but make sue DNS is running on the server and you ISP DNS servers are forward in the server. Then in your router you will need to assign your server as DNS.

dberg35,

I don´t have sure if I understood what you are saying...

DNS is installed on the server... so I think it is running... How can I test it?

"and you ISP DNS servers are forward in the server. Then in your router you will need to assign your server as DNS."

This is more complicated to understand... sorry but I´m new about this topics :(

As far as I know, the router must have an ISP dns server to translate any url that both the laptop and the server may ask. My domain is something.com (unfortunatty something.com does exists on the web!...). If the dns pointed at the laptop is firstly the dns of the server, I hope that the domain will be translated inside and not outside.

Now, about what you were talking about: I need to give the dns address of my server to the router instead of the address of the ISP? And to my server, the DNS of the ISP?Did I understand right? If this is true, the router will always need the server to translate URL at the outside, right?

Sorry my lack of knowledge about this.

Thank you

Your preferred DNS setting on your both laptop and server must be the IP address of the domain controller.

Your ISP DNS servers should be added as forwarders in the DNS console on the server. Open DNS console, right click server - properties - forwarders tab and add in your ISPs DNS servers to the forwarder list.

Doing the above means that your DC will forward any DNS requests that it can't resolve to your ISP dns servers.

Have a look at this;

At the end of this article there are links to other articles on using DNS with windows.

Hello all,

Ok, but when i try to connect to the domain in windows 2003, it gives me an error message. When I go to network identification, I click properties then in domain enter my domain name, then enter a user name and password and it says

"The following error occurred attempting to join domain <DomainName.DomainSuffix>:
The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help. OR
Network path not found."

I made sure that i was logged on as administrator and triple checked to make sure that i have TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service on automatic and is started. I also disable the firewall on the server.

Any ideas on this? :(

On your laptop have you set the preferred DNS server setting in your TCP/IP settings to be the domain controllers IP address????

Open a command prompt on the laptop and do ipconfig /all and post the results, also do the same on the server would be helpful.

Ok you are being asked for a user name and pwd, are you using the administrator login? Is your domain a .com or .local?

Try this out. on the computer you want to access the domain. Open up network connections.
Open up the properties for LAN connection.
On the general tab scroll down to "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
Highlight this. then click properties.
Click the radio button onthe bottom
"Use the following DNS server addresses"

***PUT YOUR SERVERS IP ADDRESS HERE***

click ok, close
Also open up properties for my computer click the Computer name tab.
I'm assuming that your domain and computer name is already set. cool...
so click NETWORD ID
follow the prompts
GOOD LUCK

Hello,

Pagy, I will do that as soon as I arrive home :). I will then post the configuration here.

dberg35, yes, I´m being asked for a user/pw. I use this:

user: administrator
pw: password

This user does exists and is login on at the server when I´m trying it using the laptop. My domain is .com.

haitianfella, I already done that. That is way I can get the login box, now. At my first try, the dns was pointing first to the router, and so I could find a DSN server.

Thank you

Ok does administrator have domain admin rights? Also if this is a .com domain is your server hosting a web site, otherwise it should be a .local. When joining a pc to the domain are you entering the domain as mydomain.com or just mydomain?

Hi,

Here is the information. My domain is .com. I agrre that is should be local, but I think it should works with com, right?

laptop:

connection-specific DNS suffix: internet_provider.com
(given by the router... can this be the problem?)

DHCP enabled: yes (router)

IP: 192.168.0.101
mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.0.1 (router)
DNS servers: 192.168.0.100 (DC server)
netbios: disabled

nslookup (dc server)
Default Server: dc_name.domain.com
Address: 192.168.0.100

dc server:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : internet_provider.com
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 127.0.0.1
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

nslookup (dc server)
Default Server: localhost
Address: 127.0.0.1

I can´t see what is wrong...

Thank you

This is the issue (DNS Servers . . 127.0.0.1) Your DNS should be your server IP Address. You need to put your ISP DNS into your server DNS Forwarder table and change your router DNS to your servers IP Address.

Hi dberg35,

DNS Servers: 127.0.0.1 is from the domain controler. This appeared after the creation of the reverse zone. I thought this wouldn´t be a problem as 127.0.0.1 is the DC, so it should be the same as 192.168.0.100.

What about the Connection-specific DNS Suffix? Does this will be changed when I change the router DNS?

Another doubt I have is about the default gateway. I´m using the router IP address. Is this right? What this means? The strange is that I can reach the Internet from both the laptop and the server, even that the DNS service used as not a forwarder zone configured. So how can I have access to the Internet? Is due to the default gateway? (If the DNS dowsn´t help, the gateway will be used?)

Thank you

Here is my network setup...and this works.

Router IP 192.168.0.254
Servers IP 192.168.0.100 & 110

In my DNS forwarder I have my ISP DNS servers
12.x.x.x & 12.x.x.x

In my router I put in my Servers 192.168.0.100 & 110.
My router is also doing DHCP.

So here what a local pc IP info looks like

IP 192.168.0.30
Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.254
DNS 192.168.0.100 192.168.0.110

Hope this helps
