All,

I recently restored a laptop... Installed Windows 98 then upgraded to XP Pro. The laptop has a wireless card and has access to the internet. My problem is that I need it to join a domain and the domain selection (Network ID) under system/computer name is greyed out. I am logged in as the administrator.. The PC has access to the internet... and I can ping my NT 4.0 domain controller.

Please Help

Have you clicked the radio button for 'domain' to give it focus?

The more you know, the more you realise there is to know....

The domain button is greyed out and cannot be selected...

Don't know if anything to do with problem - but why did you install 98 and upgrade to XP? Clean install of XP much better option - upgrades tend to have more problems.

Is the wireless card the only network access to laptop? Is the network the wireless card connects to part of the domain?

Since it was an upgrade, a lot of that configuration was probably pulled straight from the original Win98. Were you running Client for Microsoft Windows on your TCP/IP configuration? If so, how did you have it set up?

(Must agree, BTW, that a clean re-install would be umpteen times better to work with.)

What is the account you are trying to join with? Are you logged in as Local Admin, or someone else? Theoritically, if you don't have enough privelages, you shouldn't get past the network ID stage, but its worth a check.

Picking up on NcCorduan, make sure you have got 'client for microsoft networks' installed on the relevant adapter.
