Job crashes or hangs on verification

Wondering if anyone's had similar issues as the following. The backup server is Win2K, SP2. Remote agents are same or NT4, SP6a. Using ARCserve 2000 with the dubious SP4 applied July 17. Verifications have worked in the past and did initially after the application of SP4.

SP4 was applied to the backup server and remote agents on July 17. On July 30, verifications began halting the jobs when a remote commuter was hit. (i.e. the local machine is able to be verified.) I have confirmed this by testing remote machines individually and each has crashed at the beginning of verification.

No errors or helpful information is provided in the job or arcserve logs. Nothing has been changed on the old jobs, the test jobs were created new. There have been no changes on the network since the application of SP4.

Any light that can be shed on this would be helpful as, of course, CA doesn't address this.

These are my issues after installing Arcserve SP4 on Arcserve 2000 on a W2k server w/SP2. I'm in a mixed environment running Microsoft and Novell servers. After the SP 4 install I was unable to expand any of the Novell servers to see it's Volumes or directories through the client agent. But the backup jobs would still run so there were no connectivity problems. So I was unable to create any new jobs or run restores. I had to finally install Novell gateway services on the w2k server so I can drill down to the Network Level to expand the Novell servers. I also started having the jobs run without completion. Arcserve does have a fix for that now. QO20824 is the fix. I still have not seen a fix for the Novell issue.

regards,

I have already applied QO20824. I guess I wasn't clear first time round, but the backup of all machines completes, it's only the verification (fingers crossed) that chokes at this point--and that only on the remote agents.

If you have the option of calling for support (costs $$$) you should -- and escalate it. I've had eight issues since March and now have resolution on five, but have had to work with top support and engineers to do so. Unfortunately, only squeaky wheels get any results from these guys. Glad you have a work-around in the interim. That's what's gotten my jobs complete these last five months! I wish you the best in getting results.

Interesting issues..

So what your saying is I can expect more issues to crop up with SP4?

I just applied SP4 to Arcserve2000 last night at the recommendation of enterprise support (plus qo19666, qo020824, qo020711) to deal with a job hanging at the endof system state backup of the Arcserve manager system. csconner

You can expect issues with ARCserve--period. I think generally (others seem to agree) that if you can wait out any of the fixes/service packs, then do it. I don't apply one unless it specifically addresses current issues I'm having. The "nice" thing about the software is that it will work fine, all of a sudden start having problems and then self correct--all for no explicable reason.

If you're in question about whether a fix really addresses your issues, email support about it. That, at least, I've not had too many problems with. Or, better yet, check Tek-Tips for feedback. I've gotten more help here than from CA's own techs.

Hopefully, SP4 won't cause you too much grief.

geekgirl,

thanks for the response. I understand your views on arcserve lack of consistency and the less than (at times) desireable responses from tech support. I'm lucky when it comes to tech support, we are an enterprise customer so seem to get the better techs from Islandia NY.

As for the tide washing in and out, that I'm all to framilar with. I've been supporting arcserve here at this account for nearly two years, upgraded from 6.61 to 2000 and have been living with the product for the last 18 months or so. csconner
