Recently when using my mouse, it has started having a very slow jerky motion. Usually it starts after I have been using the computer for awhile, but not always. It doesn't matter if I'm on-line or not, but it does seem worse when I'm connected. My keyboard also does this. I will type, but have a delayed action on the screen, or only half of the letters show up. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Main things to try:

Give them a clean...
Try them on a different computer...
Reinstall them...
Get new ones...
Try different ports i.e. if its a PS2 mouse, try a USB one etc.

Can't really think of anything else right now...

I aint no computer expert but when you mentioned the kboard delay the first thing that came to mind was a lack of memory ppower, I'm not sure but go with the clean, and reinstall drivers, could also be board over heating (have you moved comp recently? see how much "stuff" you got running in the background, but first check the basics, 1 as above (clean), 2 connections secure(chances r if they werent you wouldnt get anything,3 free up more resources, 4 reinstall drivers, 5 make sure M/B aint overheating,6 d/load some diagnostic utilities(try download.com) thats all I can say, prop no use to you at all but its what I would try!!!!

Thanks for the tips, but I am using a Microsoft cordless optical mouse. I installed new batteries and the reciever is within 2 feet or less, and the bottom is clean. Just curious, but could this be some kind of software problem? When it does it, it's like when your on-line and a page is trying to pull up. Also, has anyone heard of a stealth program.

How do I check for a lack of memory power? I haven't moved my computer lately, but I'm on it 8-12 hours a day. The system board was replaced back in Oct. It was only 8 months old, so it was still under warrenty. How could I check to determine if it is overheating? The computer is in a enclosed desk, but the front is open and I installed a 3 in. fan in the back blowing the air directly into the computer fan. Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you done the obvious--such as removing temp files and doing a de-frag? Also, if your virus scan software is set to scan "all files" it could cause that problem--especially if it is McAfee. I think it's better to do a manual virus scan on all files often, instead of letting it do it automatically. Also, make sure you have enough RAM. I don't know what the specs are for your PC.

Open up the My Computer Icon and right click your hard drive and see how much unused space you have on your hard drive under Properties. Windows likes to have about 500 Megs of free space. On the newer versions of windows if you drop below about 384 Megs of free space you will receive a warning.

Windows uses this free space to run its virtual memory system. It swaps blocks of memory on and off of the hard drive.

If you have an older PC, you could benefit from some extra memory. However, if you think you will be upgrading your PC or motherboard don't spend money on older memory that will be incompatable. If you have over 500 Megs of free space on your hard drive and still have problems, then that is an indicator that your PC may be past its prime. I have an older PC sitting in the corner of my basement now. The old P133 just isnt fast enough to keep up. Buy a standard ATX case and you can just replace the motherboard when it gets old. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I am working at a help desk and not too long ago the McAfee virus scan was randomly running system scans in the background. This was causing a lot of delays in with the mouse and the keyboard. Do you have McAfee? Or another virus protection program? We just had to update the Dat file and that took care of the problem. You might want to check out other apps that might be running in the background as well.

I think I have McAfee, the virus warning screen pops up on occasion. I don't have any other programs running in the background that I'm aware of. How would I update the Dat file and can a program be running and me not be aware of it? How could I check for the also?

DAT files have to be updated weekly. If you have never updated your DAT files, then you need to purchase and install the latest virus scan software. Then make it a point to update it every Friday. They still usually come out with a new search engine once a year, so that means buying new software again. If you want to stay virus free you have to do it. Scanning for viruses with the LATEST software is just a part of normal maintenance on a PC. Sounds to me like you haven't been keeping the maintenance
up to date on your PC. You need the latest updates applied to your Operating System, your Browser, and your anti-virus software. You need to delete Temp files, unecessary software, and defrag the hard drive on a regular basis. I'm always amazed at how many people never do anything to their PC for years and still expect it to work properly.
