After upgrading to XP Pro I can't get Java apps in IE to work. Is this a problem with XP or has the latest patch to IE broken the link? (^%#%$#%$# M$)[mad]

XP is at sp1
IE is at sp2 (6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.021108-1929)

Start here:
You could always get the Sun Java machine for Windows, and not bother with trying to figure out why the windows one doesn't work.

Cheers,
Jim

Comtech, does that mean there is something other than
Sun Java???????

Well of course a microsoft broken version......

Even with SP1, the java machine can go haywire (as you've found out), so yes, you can install Sun java and not bother with Windows java (which is full of bugs and a lawsuit from Sun anyhow).

Cheers,
Jim

I have the latest from Sun. The error message I got was "Applet JavaCamPush notinited" in the status line of IE. Also at the java app for the time says it fails. I am going to download another browser to see if the problem is the same.

The problem with the Java problems happens with both XP Home and XP Pro I have found.

Heres my theory on whats going on.

If you install Windows XP from a CD that does not have SP1 included, you will notice that the Java stuff is included.

If you install Windows XP from a CD that does contain SP1 included, you will notice that the java stuff is included.

If you install Windows XP from a CD that does not have SP1 included, then go to do the windows updates from the Microsoft Website, SP1a completely eliminates any built in Java support.

If you install Windows XP from a CD that does have SP1 included, then go to do the windows updates from the Microsoft Website, SP1a is not downloaded, and hense, the Java stuff will still work.

The fix I found was to go to and download from there.

A customer brought this to my attention just the other day. A few months ago, he purchased a copy of Windows XP Home, without the service pack. He came in and told us that he was unable to go to a particular site because Java was not installed. The instructions on the website that he was at told him the directions that needed to be done to get the Java stuff to work. Unfortunately, with the SP1a download, all mention of Java had been removed in the setup and prefs, so unfortunately he was at a loss. He went to the Microsoft site itself, and again, he ran into a stumbling block.

We did manage to get the customer back up and running, but, without a lot of patience on my part, and a lot of understanding as to why he was so upset.

This problem is going to occur to users who do the windows updates after any Windows OS reinstall, and the CD they've used does not have the service pack up until just prior to the court injunction. To use XP as an example, if any CD out there has SP1 (Not SP1a) you're going to find that Java is still built in. If any CD out there does not have SP1 then you must go to the Java.com (Mentioned above) and just download. Its all automatic (Under XP it was anyways) and it worked perfectly fine.

Also, just to note, it seems that 98 and 2000 machines are free from the lack of Java problems. Not sure of 2000s SP3 has the Java support removed yet.

There is still a direct link to Microsoft VM release 3810 on the Microsoft site:
Or you can get it through the Windows Update Catalog:

1. Go to the Windows Update web site.
2. Click on "Windows Update Catalog".
3. Click on Find updates for "Microsoft Windows operating systems".
4. Select your OS from the list.
5. Click "Advanced search options".
6. In the text box, type in "VM" but without the quotes.
7. Click the button to search.
8. Click the "Critical Updates and Service Packs (1)" link.
9. There you go, the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine.
