I am having trouble with the fonts in my QuarkXpress program. I am using Quark 4.1, on Mac OS 9, on a mac G4. The fonts are loaded, but continue to show up with jagged edges in Quark. They are jagged on the screen as well as when I try to print out a document. I notice that in the extensions manager there is an error symbol and the message, "extensions software failed to load" next to the 'font creator' extension. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the problem. I've tried disabling the font creator extension, reinstalling Quark, etc., but the problem persists. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks!

Have you installed ATM from your software disk? if so check the setting from the control panels under the apple menu, are you using some sort of suitcase to manage the fonts?

Are the printer fonts in the same folder as the Screen fonts ?

Like Greg25 says do you have ATM Lite install in the control panels folder.

Try rebuilding the Desktop (Alt + Command).

Font creator in Quark should not be effect the way the fonts view.

Are you using either suitcase or ATM deluxe, or are the fonts in the system folder\fonts ? If you can't fix it in 20 call someone who can.

Thanks for your responses. I am using Extensis Suitcase to manage my fonts. I am assuming that the printer fonts are in the same folder as the screen fonts.

I would double check this. The only two reasons that fonts appear Jagged are:

1. ATM is not running: therefore the font will only appear correct on screen at the font size you have the font for. E.g. 12 pt if you enlarge the font it will not appear correct.

2. If the Printer fonts are not in the same folder as the screen fonts. If you can't fix it in 20 call someone who can.

Hey Yodagirl (or anyone):

Did you ever actually solve this problem? I realize it's two years ago now, but I am having the identical problem. I have an iMac, am using Quark 4.11 in OS 9.2. Any postscript font I install appears jaggy in Quark both on screen and printed, though it works fine in Illustrator and Photoshop. I too have noticed that the extension "Font Creator" says it "failed to load" and attempts at re-loading are unsuccessful.

I don't use ATM and it's not installed in my system, and yes, I have both screen fonts and printer fonts together in my System Folder, Fonts folder.

As a graphic designer, fonts are essential to my livelihood. I didn't have this problem with the earlier version of Quark. Any solutions?

you should upgrade your version of ATM whether you use it or not. 4.6 or higher should fix your problem.
