Since I've reinstalled I no longer have many features.

My windows explorer used to have an internet explorer interface, with back and forward button etc. Now its just the old fashioned, can't do mych, explorer.

I've lost the ability to right-click on Start Menu items.

I've lost the ability to place shortcuts on my task bar. I found the minimize all (show only desktop) button particularly useful.

There are probably many other features that I no longer have!

I HAVE installed IE 6.0 and I thought that would update explorer etc. But no!

What do I need to do?

Many thanks

elziko

what you need to install is the enhanced service pack 6a,
it can be found at Microsoft's webiste at
if you are not using the binary version of NT go to this link

The features you are missing will not come with a basic install or reinstall of nt, you have to put on the SP6 or SP6a
hope this helps..... Jay~

According to winver.exe I'm already running with SP6a. I just downloaded the binary version of the service pack anyway and when I ran I was told it was not a valid NT application. Does this mean I don't have the binary version?

Any other help would be appreciated. I always thought it was an install of IE.x.x that gave such enhancements.

Cheers

No, I have just re-installed 6a which went fine. It has not affected my interface at all.

Anyone know what gives these interface enhancements.

I remember taht they first came with IE4 so I could uninstall IE6 then install IE4 before re-installing IE6 over the top of that?

Any ideas??

cheers,

The component you need is Active Desktop. It's not packaged in IE5 anymore, and it's only available with Internet Explorer v4 as an add-on component, or IE5+ but ONLY when built using the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK).
The component you're looking for is "Windows Desktop Update components"..that is Active Desktop, and that's what will give you that functionality..not SP6.

It's a component of Internet Explorer.

Hope this helps.

OK, now I've found the actual problem. Many thanks.

I was, at the time, running IE6. I uninstalled that returning me to a version of IE5. Unfortunatly when I installed IE5 I didn't select the option to keep uninstall information. Doh!

I've tried installing IE4.x and it informs me that although I'm installing a old version it will install any newer or missing componets (or something to that effect), so I choose my Active Desktop installation and the setup falls over complaining:

Setup could not verify the information needed for this installation

Presumably it was looking for the uninstall info for IE5??

Does anyone know of ANY way I can get Active Desktoip onto my computer without re-nstalling windows, installing IE4 with AD and then installing IE6 after that? The interface additions are a MASSIVE improvement that I just can't concentrate without!

Cheers,

elziko

If you have IE5 in your add/remove prog list, try this:

Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Control Panel .

Double-click Add/Remove Programs , and then click the Install/Uninstall tab.

In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools , and then click Add/Remove .

Click Restore the previous Windows configuration , or click Advanced to specify any additional components you want to remove.

Click OK . The Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools Setup screen appears. This portion of Setup is referred to as Maintenance mode.

When Setup starts, click OK to restore the previous version of Internet Explorer and shared components. You are prompted to verify that you want to restore the previous version. Click Yes to start the uninstall process. When the uninstall process is completed, click Restart Windows when you are prompted to do so.

If it's not in the add/remove list, reinstall IE5.0, then try the above instructions. If that fails..start over, and at least you'll know how to do it cleanly from that point forward..

Good luck..

Looks like a re-install is needed! Just a quick question, if I use my setup disk and do a restore will that restore the original version of IE?

Or can I do a reinstall over the current install KEEPING all my applications and many many registered DLLs & OCXs we use for development?

Cheers,

elziko

Restoring your system will restore it to the point of all your system files being default. Any registrations you have will be lost, so It's essentially like starting from scratch. It also restores your registry which will corrupt most programs you have installed.

Especially in development..use this opportunity to wipe the slate clean, and start from scratch. :)

I have just started from scratch and re-registered all my DLLs!!! I had only used the system for a few hours until I realised I was missing the Active Desktop stuff.

I cant believe that they dropped such a useful addition from IE!

Thanks anyway!

This *just in*...apparently there IS another way, and much easier. Check this out..hacking at it's finest here..;)

1. Run IE 5.0 setup, ie5setup.exe.
2. When the license dialog appears, locate the iesetup.cif file in a sub-folder of the %TEMP% folder.

3. Use Notepad to open iesetup.cif.

4. For each occurence of UIVISIBLE=0, change it to UIVISIBLE=1.

5. Save the file.

6. Accept the license agreement.

7. Choose Custom Install. You will see Windows Desktop Update in the list of selectable components.

NOTE: You may have to use Add/Remove Programs to Repair Internet Explorer.

How cool is that? Nothing to it..If anybody tries this - i'd love to hear if it works. Im gonna try it asap..

..save this tip! Valuable stuff here..:)

Thats funny!!!

I just found several tips just the same at this thread:

thread608-27342

The one I tried though which works 100% was this: (courtesy of reghakr)

Download this file:

and follow these directions to the letter.

How to install the Windows Desktop Update without having to install IE4.

1. Unzip the contents of Desktop Update.ZIP to a temporary folder.
2. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to your temporary folder.
3. Right click on IE4SHELL.INF
4. Choose install in context menu.
5. You will receive an error. Choose Skip.
6. Reboot your computer. Be advised, your start button will not work.
7. Double click on your My Computer icon and select Control Panel.
8. Double click on Add\Remove Programs.
9. Choose IE 5.0, click on add/remove.
10. Now choose Repair and OK.
11. Reboot your computer.
12. Now go to Start>Run and type the following:
regsvr32.exe webvw.dll

The show desktop and channel icons may be missing from your Quick
Launch bar. If this is the case, follow these directions to create
them.
1. Copy the both the channels.scf file and the desktop.scf file to your
Windows/System folder.
2. Rename the channels.scf file to "View Channels.scf" and rename desktop.scf
to "Show Desktop.scf"
3. Right click and create a shortcut to each scf file and place them
in the Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
folder.
4. Reboot.

Well, well! Looks like I'm OK then. It would take quite a lot of work to suss all that out! Even finding the right CAB file would be labourious enough. I only have one very small problem! I have now ended up with to StartUp flders in my startmenu and WIndows won't let be remove either of them! Any ideas??

Cheers,

elziko

That's normal behavior (if it's the Startup folders in the "start/program menu you're talking about). One startup entry is for the 'All Users" profile, and another is for the current users profile.

They are protected system folders, and shouldn't be deleted anyway.
