It takes 5min to show my network connection after log on (off-site)

When I start my laptop at home (so not connected to the domain) it takes about 5 min when I login until my network connections are up. During this I can use my laptop normally, but nothing that uses the network connection (like internet explorer). When logging on to the domain there is no problem.
Is there a way to work around?
I use WXP SP2 in a W2K3 domain.
