I am using ISA 2006 to filter inbound SMTP and OWA traffic to Exchange 2003 servers. I need to setup an outbound SMTP relay. I was wondering if I could use the ISA box. Does anyone know if this can be done, and how to do it.

Any information would be great.

Thanks

Do you need ISA to allow outbound SMTP mail from the Exchange server or do you need ISA to allow external clients to use your exchange server as an SMTP relay?

We need ISA to allow outbound SMTP mail from the Exchange server.

Your internal Exchange server is configured to use ISA as a S-NAT client. Meaning you put ISA as the gateway on your IP settings and DO NOT use the proxy client. Then you have to open an outbound packet filter for SMTP port 25. You will also need to verify your allow rule allows either all protocols or at least includes SMTP port 25 in the allowed protocols. This will allow your exchange server to send mail through your ISA server.

YOu can also run the mail server publishing wizard which will open all the necassary ports for the Exchange server to properly send and recieve email.

A good website for ISA information is All kinds of good nuggets of information on this site.
