All,

When a maintainer does preventative/periodic maintenance on a Meridian PBX - is there a listing of things that are (and are not!) checked?

We've had a couple of failures recently which we believe should have been detected by PMs, but without a 'check list' we are in the dark.

Any help you can give is much appreciated.

Regards
Jimbo

check mail for errors and seer codes, fix the problem.. non users forwarded to mail and stale mb's

check the frame for jumpers that need to be removed

they are about 100 more, but that is a good start

how big were the failures. I've done PMs before, but I never ran into anything that would cause a problem if not taken care of. It was ususally, there was a problem when I got there.

that can be true, but imo, streaming errors, mis-programed sets (bad on later rls), anything that loads the cpu or takes major ram space can cause ini or worse.. if the problem was a bad card, usually not preventable. not replacing known bad cards can cause problems.. ie, moving stations off of ports instead of replacing them can drag down power supplies

Also there is physical maintenance with any telco switch. Backups should be done and rotated. The backup entry point should be cleaned; if tape drive, clean it with a cleaning tape, if a reel to reel clean stems with alcohol, always wear a wrist strap. A copy of your backup should be stored off site. If a local switch do the tape backup one a week. If a LD do it daily. Fans should be cleaned, Data dumps should be done. Always clean up after yourself,if you no longer use a service take out the cross connect wires and keep records up to date. NEVER assume in telecom always have manual or helmsman open when doing work. Dont eat or drink in switch room. Clean fibre leads, dont let your two year old in the switch room, etc, etc, etc, etc. Dont know so much about the sw side of the meridian as John Poole, Sandyml and Nortellian! AJK

All,

My mistake - I should have specified hardware maintenance.

We did a BKO at one site which failed (PCMCIA card or drive). We tried BKOs at a few other sites - some were successful, but others failed - same errors. I was interested in finding out if there is a set 'check list' which maintainers should be doing - and we can then see if PCMCIA cards/drives are included and take appropriate action if they are/aren't.

Thanks for all the info so far - much appreciated!

i not only do dual (redundant switch) backup every morning before 8, i also check to make sure the midnight's did a clean backup.. without load 43 in drol, the switch only does backups if needed. for your problem, look at ld 143 edd clr.. atbo .. forces a backup if it can be done. if you don't have a checklist for routine maint, you don't have routine maint..
