Hi all,

I access some websites which prompt me to install the Java VM. I get bounced to the Microsoft Site where I am presented with a message saying it is no longer available from Micrsoft for XP. I have downloaded the Sun version but some web sites display errors.

What works best?

I have all the updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com. How do I know I have the Microsoft Java VM installed? Surley if I already had it I would not have been prompted to install it anyway? [morning]

To check the version, go to a command prompt (Start->Run->CMD), then type JVIEW and hit enter.

The Java Version number will be on the first line that says Microsoft Command-Line Loader Java Version 5.00.XXXX

- where XXXX is the release number you're looking for (the most current is 3805)

Microsoft closed the install-on-demand feature 30 days after it told Java inventor Sun Microsystems it would reinstate Java in Windows XP through the forthcoming Service Pack 1 but remove it altogether in 2004.

Microsoft said the option was removed to take an issue off the table in legal actions with Sun.

For 9x, ME, NT, XP msjavx86.exe is also available currently through a number of ftp sites such as:

ftp://ftp.redcom.ru/pub/support/windows/corporate/8.04/winxp/en/com_microsoft.internetexplorer6x/x86WinXP/com_microsoft.javavm_3319_MIL_4275/MSJavx86.exe
ftp://ftp.uq.edu.au/mirror/microsoft/patches/winxp/javavm_3319_MIL_4275/MSJavx86.exe
ftp://ftp.intergraph.com/ingr/pub/old/pub/federal/msjavx86.exe (probable, but not positive that this is 3805)

You get a golden star for that one. Absolutely brilliant, I had the problem yesterday and it seems to have fixed my other problems as well.

Many Thanks

SP1 for Windows XP has added a feature that allows the user to enable plug-ins. It appears that this is where one would enable non-microsoft Java. However, when one clicks the radio button on the non-microsoft java, nothing happens. So, it would appear that there may be a glitch in SP1 that does not allow the plug-in Sun Java to work. What a surprise.

Unfortunately, the downloads shown in this thread do not work for new WXP(compaq)machines. This is an update patch and requires MSJVM to already be installed. Our new machines do not come with MSJVM on them at all. Does anyone know of a site that would have the complete package?

Please, search google, and you will find tons of it

I think you have to install the older version first so that Windows Update can update it to the latest version ( Version 5.00.3810). It is a legal matter where they cannot install Java but are allowed to update already installed versions.
