Is it possible to do install / update sw & config FROM the mgd node?

We have ITO managed nodes, managed by a mgmt server at a remote (distant!) site. There is no access to this mgmt server from here.

We do, however, have access to the managed nodes.

If I want to do an install/update sw and config, is it possible to instigate from the managed node?

All HP/UX, ITO 5.3.

That's a very interesting question.

Remote Mgmt Server(ITO/VPO) --> You have no access to

To my knowledge, there is no way to update a managed node's information from the nodes themselves. This would need to be done from the Remote Management Server. It can be done from the ITO/VPO GUI or from the command line, either way from the Manager.

You can investigate what is on the node currently. On the managed node somewhere under the directory structure of /var/opt/OV/share/tmp/OpC_appl....you should find TEMPLATES....(not in front of a machine right now so I can't tell you specifically -or- just do a find for TEMPLATES) Searching this file should tell what templates are currently assigned to <this> node.

The only other option is to work with someone who has root access to the Management Server(or opc_adm access to the GUI) to do an update for you. If you want to investigate before the update is done, they could do an opcdcode on a specific template and send you that decoded information.
