Is dhcp needed in a windows 2000 Domain when use DNS

Hello

I know how what dns and dhcp is for, but i never found the answer for, is dhcp needed if dns is used? if AD is activated dns is automatically installed.

how does the dns and dhcp service work together in a windows 2000 domain on a cluster.

i just know that in w2k domain all w2k computer could update the DNS entries, so they dont need a dhcp server, if there are nt or lower systems they need at least a dhcp server for update the dns entry, maybe plus a wins server.

is it like i described or is it different ?

If you are using static IP's you will need static entries in DNS, just like you would do for a server. DHCP is only needed if you want to use Dynamic DNS with computers pre-2k.

And to add to what Ntr0P says, If you are using Win2k computers with static adresses, Windows Dynamic DNS will pick up the DNS, and IP entries from the Win2k client if you tick the box on each client that allows Dynamic updates. In this case, even though the clients have static addresses, static entries are not needed on the Win2k dynamic DNS servers.
