IrDA Connectivity Question 1

I just bought a mobile phone and its documentation says it can connect to the PC via IrDA. Since I'm totally unfamiliar with this type of connexion, I thought I would just ask. My motherboard's documentation (a GA-7VKML VIA KM266) says it has "1 IrDA Connector for IR", but I'm not sure where that brings me. Starting the software for the phone and the phone's IrDA connectivity doesn't work (I was almost sure it wouldn't).

Please tell me if/how I can connect the mobile to the PC and if additional hardware is needed. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hi

You need a serial IrDA adapter cable to connect with your motherboard.

Your motherboard should have two serial ports (I think), COM 1 (IrDA connector) and COM 2.

You also need your mobile phone software, if any, otherwise you may have to download from the mobile phone website.

Does your motherboard have USB ports? If have, you can also use USB IrDA adapter instead of serial ones.

That's nice to know... now I'll be off grumbling about cables not being included and the such I'll probably go with a USB adapter.

One word of caution/advice, is the mobile phone you own a Samsung???

If it is, then forget about buying any USB IrDA adapter, you will have to purchase the original Samsung IrDA cable....

Samsung's IrDA, er.... is not quite IrDA standard....

Trust me.... I own a samsung and nokia and the former has been giving me hell!

It's a Siemens, so hopefully I won't get in trouble with that. Still, it was more than helpful to find that out. I will keep it in mind in the future.
