Just read about a new technology being finalized (5 years in development) by the dude that invented RISC and RAID-that's supposed to increase computing speeds 100X ! Combines RAM and the CPU. In 20 or so years, processor speeds and memory capacity have increased dramatically, while memory speed has only increase about 10 fold. This is suppossed to change all that-to be introduced by IBM later in the year. Seems like a milestone comparable to the invention of the floppy drive by WoZ and the GUI by Microsoft, I mean Apple, I mean Xerox :) Just FYI- comments welcome.

110 today , but it's a dry heat!

Let's credit Al Shugart with an adaptation of something that came from IBM for the floppy.
And how much will they charge for other people to use the technology. Been there too many times with their propriotory designs. And their manipulations to gain market share.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a shareholder and I gain when they gain. But at some time users have to realize that they have been shafted by corporate greed. And that corporate greed can also bite back like their micro-channel fiasco. Ed Fair

Yes, a reference would have been nice-my source was the magazine Red Herring. I looked on their website to see if the article was available and didn't have any luck. It's in the June15/July 1 issue, pg 108. I'll try to paste it into this forum later today, no time now.
Ed,
I ran across an old interview with Steve Jobs, (1985 from Playboy) and he said that his partner Steve Wozniak invented the floppy drive for Apple-Arch competitor of IBM-did Mr Shugart tweak a few things and call it his invention?

Shugart Associates had the patents and the market for about a year with their 35 track ss/sd 140kb drive. Don't remember the Woz track, I avoided the Apple stuff because of their support policies. Both Apple and IBM had the idea that they were the only companies that knew how to build computers and the market cleaned their clocks.
