Just moved a client who was using Panasonic digital hybrid phones to a ipo ver 9.03 preferred, combo card and 9611G's 1-9641G. We moved the 4 POTS lines due to time constraints and had a plan to migrate to SIP. Upon installation the client noticed an echo associated with external calls only, upon testing it, he was correct and it seems to come and go. The sound for the outside callers is perfect. We ran an impedance test on the lines but it came up with the default value. We also tried to adjust the gain settings on the lines ( lowered ) and the VCM echo return loss to minimize this ( higher ). The client response was "the echo repeat is quicker (less cavern-- more concert hall), but still noticeable and annoying." Would anyone have some insight on this, or am I wasting my time and go SIP? I have recently read that POTS lines and voip sets are not a good combo and use digital sets with POTS. I tested this, and the digital 9508 did not echo. Any help on this is welcome. Thanks, Dave.

Check in system status what codec your users are using. Try changing to G.722.

I did not adjust the system codec settings. However, I followed another thread recommendation from tek tip member cmnstr from thread940-1725834 in regards to echo on analog lines with VOIP phones. As suggested, I ended up turning off both Echo Cancellation and Echo Reduction under Lines -- Analogue Options. There was an immediate improvement, albeit the echo is still there though far less frequent or annoying. We then grounded the rack and IP Office to a true earth ground but that didn't seem to make any further change to the call quality when tested. Later I was on a 1/2 hr. call with the customer and they only heard one brief echo of their own voice during that call duration. I didn't notice anything at my end as usual.

I'm still considering adding the G.722 codec. Would I make it available as the first codec selection in the system codec settings? I'm using U-Law settings. I was thinking about trying to adjust some other settings such as the Main Hums Filter or Quiet Line as I wanted to exhaust all the options to eliminate the echo if possible. While the customer is a lot happier, I would like to get rid of the echo completely.

You've got a fault. Make it the only codec available and see if it makes a difference.
Go hard first. Isolate. Then ease restrictions. That's how you test faults.
Isolate. Isolate. isolate. Recreate.
Make it. Break it. Make it again.

First thing you should have done is update to 9.06. I believe there was a fix for analog trunk issue.

If vegetarians love animals so much, why are they eating all of their food?

no no no stay away from 9.0.6 this release has a ton of bugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
