Hi all.

I have a server edition primary server linux based that stops responding.
If you press any button on all the IP phones they don’t respond. You won’t make or receive calls. IP Office Manager will not be able to reboot the server or change any configuration.
When I SSH into the server there is an error ‘Cannot allocate memory”. Logging in via the command line takes many attempts. This has occurred many times and usually resolved by rebooting.

How can this be fixed?

This means either not enough memory/defective memory or a memory leak in the software.
So, check memory usage the command:
ps aux | sort -nk +4 | tail
will show the top ten apps using memory

or you have a rabbit virus aka fork bomb
A fork bomb is a process which keeps starting themselve and thus using all memory.
You can limit the number of processes per users with the command : "ulimit -u 30" that limits the number of processes at 30 pere user.

If it is a memory leak then contact Avaya but be sure you have a 9.0 or 9.1 system at latest build.

We just ran into this on a new IP Office 9.1 Server Edition installation - turns out the power user license assignments were misconfigured and oversubscribed, and the resulting license errors filled the logs and cache to the point the system became unstable and froze (after about 28 hours). Fixing the license count resolved the issue.

(Note - the misconfiguration was that we had X licenses for power users, so we came up with a list of X users. However, the majority of the listed users had multiple extensions via either VPN phones or extra office phones, so when the profiles were set to power users the extra extensions blew up the license count)

@derflow, a lot of questioneers here do that and why not? There are these forums made for.
But, it would be gentle if the problem is solved in another forum the questioneer post the answer here.

It is OK to ask in another forum if you don't get an answer in the first one. But to ask the same question in different forums simultaneously is not the best way. In my personal opinion...

It is like shouting in the church, i agree, that is not done..

In my opinion not everyone is on each and every forum. You may have different people on that forum who may assist.
In this case we happen to be on similar forums.
If its not allowed to do so then it wont happen again.

It is not forbidden or a ethical problem, it is just that we see a lot of problems posted here which are solved in another forum and the poster does not react within this forum.
We would like to at least a little response that the problem is solved, a short explanation would be nice but not really necessery.
Just a matter of decency...

Guys,

Did we solve Tinos' problem? Was M4's post the solution? I follow your posts when I have down time and you guys answered a lot of questions for me alrady. I appreciate it.

I am confused about Tinos' problem and solution.

What happened?

Quaz

Let's come back to the original topic!

Let's hear what Tino has to say about the suggested ways to solve the issue.

Perhaps he can also tell us what version the issue occurred with. Is it 9.1 GA or is it 9.1 SP1?

9.1 SP1, Still observing. Will post results.

Indeed OneX portal on the primary server was causing the freezing. I have many expansion systems and most of them are usually down especially after hours due to power cuts.
I have noticed that when most expansion systems were unreachable OneX had errors and hence the freezing.
After stopping its services the server never froze again.
I would like to start OneX again and fix such that it does not cause the freezing.
What will be the fix? I have tried deleting the expansion systems from the providers on OneX but they keep coming back.
In the meantime OneX is stopped but I would like to use it.

How many users do use One-X Portal?
Above 300 you will need to use a separate One-X server (this is documented)
I can imaging this is causing your issues.
I am not sure if the 300 users means licensed One-X users or users in general on the whole system.
Also on 9.0.7 there are fixes for memory allocation problems.
I think this might also be the case on 9.1 which is not mentioned as being fixed in the tech bulletins.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

I think that limit has been dropped with 9.0.3 and you should be able to use as much one x users on one server as you can use voice users.

Nevertheless I wood try to install an extra Application Server. That way 'only' one x portal will be affected of that server will freeze and not telephony.

Thank you for the response.
I am for a separate server as well but worried about what will happens to the one currently installed as i feel it should be un-installed.

You can export the OneX Portal database through AFA login and then stop the service. Unmark the autostart check box and configure Server Edition to use an external application server. Import the backup into the new server.
