Hi All

I am looking to do an upgrade on our IPO 500 from version 4.2 to 8.1. The problem I have is that every company I contact will not sell me the software with out charging me some form of engineering time either for the privilege of downloading the software from Avaya and supplying it to me to insisting there engineers do the upgrade. We do not have a sold to number, so we can not register with Avaya to obtain the software, We inherited the kit when we purchased a company and it had no support.

We are a 24/7 business so getting down time is not easy and normally needs to be done out of normal hours. So engineering time is expensive.

Can any one advise where I can purchase an upgrade license from with out them charging extras I do not want. Alternatively where I can get the software from?

just for your reference we have the following

IPO 500 V1
1 x DIG DCP x 30
1 x DIG DCP V2 x 30
a mix of 5410 and 2410 handsets
PHONE8/ATM4
DIGSTA8
CARRIER/PRIS E1
VCM32

Licensees
Advanced Small Community Networking
Conferencing Center
eBLF
IP500 Upgrade Standard to Professional
12 VCM Channels
8 x IP500 Voice Networking
5 x Phone Manager Pro
5 x Phone Manager Pro IP Audio Enabled
1 x SoftConsole
Voicemail Pro (4 Ports)

We have no IP phones so I am not worried about losing them but we do use the voicemail server.

anyone had any issues doing this upgrade?

everyone will charge you some sort of fee to get you the licenses because our time is not free either even though some people coming here seem think so.
There is paperwork involved in the ordering and once you order the licenses you are on the hook for them with Avaya.

Sorry my friend but nothing is free but you might go back to the company that installed your system and maybe they are willing to do additional work for you without charging you because they made a sale already on you.

I would also try to get your system registered with Avaya if possible.

HI I am not expecting anything for free. I manager a team of engineers and developers and I know the cost of engineers time. We have a very good team of engineers and I like to keep as much in house as possible that way our response times to any issue is as fast as possible. In my experience when relying on a 3rd party it adds a delay to anything, for example one company I spoke to about this who insisted on there engineers doing the update could not do this until next wee where I can reallocate resources quicker than that.

I am finding it frustrating that I can not download the software and I have to pay someone for the privilege. Normally when you buy software it is either supplied on a disk or via a portal.

I know there is paperwork involved in a purchase but this should be covered in the mark up of the product being purchased not an additional charge.

In short I want to pay Avaya there license cost plus the retailers mark up. Not to be forced to use there engineers or be charged to supply the software on top.

ok say you would have the software needed for the upgrade and for some reason the upgrade procedure does not go well, are you qualified to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with little down time? most likely not so this is why they will not sell you the software as you are not qualified to do this procedure just as we are not qualified to do your job. Believe you want an Avaya business partner to do this upgrade or someone who has done this previous!

I am sure you can find plenty of resellers online that will sell you the licenses without forcing you to come to site. But on $0 licenses there is no markup so transferring the licenses is labour cost to do the paperwork and carrying the risk that you don't send the license key back in time which would result in full charge of all licenses and that is quite a bit as I see.
If you want to do the upgrade yourself then that is absolutely your right to do.
Check on the Avaya website for a business partner and contact them. They have to be only local to you in case something happens during the upgrade but if you follow the tech bulletins then you don't do anything different than the tech would do.

this should help you in finding one that is reasonably close to you just in case.
