We have an IPO running 4.2 and want to put use some VPN phones at some remote sites.

I can't seem to get a clear answer as to what licenses we need to do this.

We have an IPsec license, but I'm confused as to what this actually provides since the IPO doesn't have a built in VPN server.

So once we purchase a ipsec vpn server, and load vpn firmware on the phones, what license/s do we need to make them connect?

You should contact an Avaya business partner because you are way off.
You will need VPN phone licenses and a supported router.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

Thank you, I understand I need a router that passes ipsec vpn traffic.

I'm not sure what you mean by saying I'm way off, I just am unsure of which license/s are needed with 4.2 to connect a VPN phone.

Avaya VPN Licence went end of sale sometime Novenber 2009.
R6 has brought a lot of licence changes since R4.2, so indeed Peter is correct as you might want to contact Your Avaya BP, as this can get very indepth depending on Your system.

By way of i mean the IPSec license :)
This license is only for a IPSec vpn between two IPO's
This cannot be used for the VPN phones itself.

You need to upgrade to at least 6.0 where this license is not needed anymore but then you will need an IP device license for every IP phone on the system.

tlpeter, thank you for the info, we have several non vpn IP phones now, would those be grandfathered in like some other license can be when we upgrade to 5.0 or 6.0?
I'd hate to have to purchase IP devices license for every user with an IP phone...

When you have a VCM 32 or VCM 64 in your system (IP500 only) then you get 12 free IP end points for that.
Also for every licensed VCM channel you will get 3 free IP endpoint licenses.
When you have a IP406 or IP412 (cannot go any higher then 6.1) then you do not need IP endpoint licenses.

If You have VPN Phone licences, and upgrade to R6.0, they will show as invalid.
Like I said before, Avaya VPN Licence went end of sale sometime Novenber 2009.

I would upgrade to R6.1, that is the highest the 406v2 can go.

On R6 & R6.1, on a 406v2 You will get Avaya IP Phone licenses if You have a VCM card!
1 VCM at the rate of 3 phone licenses per VCM channel!
Example: If You have a VCM 8, You will have Avaya 24 IP Phone licenses, which can be also used for VPN Avaya Phones.
If You do not have a VCM, I suggest VCM 4/8/16/24/30 as they can be migrated in onto IP500 platform once you outgrow Your 406v2, giving you the Avaya IP endpoints on a IP500/500v2.

That's not true Andre, 406's and 412's do not require endoint licences at all, that's just 500 and 500v2's :)

Thank you guys, very useful info. So my 406 can be upgraded all the way to 6.1 and I'll be able to use all my IP phones, VPN or not! Just need to buy the VPN endpoint equipment for the host side, and make sure remote site routers are able to pass VPN traffic.

Is there any reason not to upgrade beyond 4.2 or 5.0?

Andy, You're probably right, I was thinking of IP400 VCM cards in a legacy card on IP500. Indeed 3 Avaya phone licenses per VCM channel were created. It's been a while since I have done anything with 406v2.

Vurk4, I would upgrade to R6.1, this will give You VPN on supported Avaya IP Phones.

If Your looking long term, You could buy a new 500v2, and you will be able to get R8.1 for free! Then you can have h.323 or VPN remote avaya phones.

I did swap 406v2 at two different sites not too long ago that simply quit working. Just My 2 cents.
