What is the difference between ipchains and iptables? Do they perform the same functions Firewall/NAT/Port forwarding? Which one is better to use?

LINUX newbie,

I'm not totally versed in this, but I do know that ipchains was designed primarily for pre-2.4 kernels.

iptables was designed for the 2.4-forward kernels, and takes advantage of the netfilter kernel module. J.R. Juiliano

I used ipchains on my FIREWALL, running Linux RH 7.1 and I am satisfy with it, I can block ports , source and destination address as well. I also used it on Masquerading sharing internet connection. Although I have'nt tried using iptables, some says it is more effective than ipchains , particularly stateful inspection.

Try playing with it so you'll know how it works
