Hi guys I have an install with a strange problem. It is all IP and was working fine for the last couple of months then about a few ago we started getting complaints that phones randomly go down. I've been there when it happens. The phones display discovering "IP Office IP Address" If I reboot them they work fine.

Any idea what could be causing this or how to fix. I am very lost. I have connected a computer to the same phone and can ping the IP office while this is happening.

Thanks

Btw. the system is running 8.1(67)

Maybe they have a virus network scanner installed lately or updated to a newer version, when it scans the IP Office the phones may drop the connection.
It seems to be random but each phone must acknoledge their presence to IP Office and when the IP Office request a update from the phone it has to respond within 90 seconds, if the scan takes just over 90 seconds some phones will reboot as the update requests from IP Office to each individual phone is every ten minutes or something like that.
This process use port 1719 and 1720, thus if they have such a scanning device ask them not to scan the Avaya MAC addresses.

We also do their IT. And to the best of my knowledge we have no such scanner. Could anything else be causing this?

I have seen this when the customer started running server backups and the switches were all piggybacked, when the backup started the traffic slowed the whole stack down and the handsets would lose connection as you describe, placing the servers on their own switch solved it for us....took a while to convince them but in the end that's what it was :)

Saw something similar years ago on a Shoretel install. Customer network had DHCP lease time set to 1 minute! After a couple of months of renewing the lease every minute of every hour of every day, the phones crashed/stopped responding. It went on for 6 months before I was able to pinpoint the issue.

I have checked the network and cannot see any issues. Also the phones have been reprogrammed as static but the problem persists. I also notice that a number of the phones show up as 4621 when they are 1608. What is going on?

That's just SSA being stupid, I wouldn't worry about that....

amriddle01, The phone display is weird when it shows up as the wrong phone type. It corrects itself if I re-register the phone.

I have seen odd issues like that on 8.1.65.
1608 phones where the display went crazy.
Only a reboot of the phone could fix it.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

I would bet a network issue, ask it dept if changes were recently made to the network.

I found the fix. Someone had installed a switch and put the vlan interface ip as the ip office ip address.

Hi,
Got that problem.
It was resolved by changing RJ-45 cables.
pin 8-9 where ok, some other not.
By playing with cable on phone connector, I could create the issue.

With FTP cat. 6 cables, problem was solved.

Then I stopped to buy cheap cables ;)

there is no pin 9 on a rj45 patch cable, pins 1-8
