I have several IP phones (4602) that will not boot. I have determined that they do not have a boot file or application file loaded. When I view the config, <no app name> and <no boot name> is displayed where one would normally find the name of the bin files.

I encountered this very problem once before but was able to fix it by hard coding an IP address and file server address on the phone and then allowing it to 'upgrade' itself from the TFTP server. However, this technique is not working in this instance. The phone is able to find the TFTP server and load the 46XXUPGRADE.SCR and 46XXSETTINGS.TXT files. However, this is immediately followed by the following message:

TFTP error:
FILE NOT FOUND

At this point, I'm stuck. Any ideas on how to load these phones?

Thanks!

try to ataache it to your pc
use a cross cable
use for the phone and the pc a static ip addres in the same range
then put in your pc's ip addres as tftp server
then use a tftp server on your pc for the files
reboot the phone and see if this helps

You must have manager open when you are doing the upgrade. Was it open when you tried?

I am pointing the 'broken' phones at the same TFTP server that the rest of the working phones point to. It is the Microsoft TFTP server component running on Windows Server 2003. I implemented a standalone TFTP server instance because the TFTP server within Manager is only active when Manager is running.

The 'broken' phones are able to load the 46xxupgrade.scr and 46xxsettings.txt files successfully from the TFTP server. The failure occurs after these files are loaded (and executed). Since the phone loads the config files, I conclude that it is communicating with the TFTP server. Nevertheless, I'll install a TFTP server on my PC as tlpeter suggested. I may be able to learn more about this problem by looking at the TFTP log on the PC. (I don't think the Microsoft TFTP server has a log function).

Has anyone else encountered this problem with IP phones?

Maybe the working phones are already on the correct firmware version and the broken phones are trying to retrieve new binfiles after they found out to be out of date using the 46XXupgrade.scr file.

So are the correct bin files in the same directory.

Are you doing this locally (ipphone and tftpserver on same networksegment) or through a router.

The 2.3 binfiles from manager 3.1.56 acted the same way and would upgrade through a router. The (bigger) but evenso 2.3 binfiles from 3.1.65 and above corrected this problem.

Even though the working phones already have the latest firmware on them, they still load the 46xxupgrade.scr and 46xxsettings.txt files on startup. Based on this, I conclude that the TFTP server is working.

On the other hand, the 'broken' 4602 phones load the 46xxupgrade.scr and 46xxsettings.txt files from the same TFTP server but then display the TFTP error: FILE NOT FOUND message.

Even so, to eleminate the TFTP server, I programmed the IP address of a PC running the Manager onto the phone. I can see from the TFTP log that the phone loads the 46xxupgrade.scr and 46xxsettings.txt files but there is nothing further in the log that will give me an idea of which file is "NOT FOUND".

The IP phone and TFTP server are on the same network.

I am running 3.2.54.

There are two kinds of 4602 phones, the 4602 sw are newer.

Are the 4602's that work and the 4602's that dont work exactly the same model? Check the model number first.

The exact model is 4602D01A. This is the non SW model. I have other phones of this same model working.

Any idea what file it is trying to load after then 46xxsettings.txt file is loaded? Does this depend on the script in 46xxupgrade.scr?

Are you pointing your TFTP server at the Manager directory??

I would try recopy these files as they may be corrupt.

I use SolarWinds as a TFTP as we have little success with the MS server. Maybe try it, it's free!!!

Fooball is not a matter of life and death-It is far more important!!!!

I have pointed these phones to both the MS TFTP server as well as another machine that was running IPO Manager.

In each case, the phone loads the 46xxupgrade.scr and 46xxsettings.txt files before I get the TFTP error: FILE NOT FOUND message.

I will try loading the SolarWinds TFTP server. I seem to recall that it provides a more detailed log. Perhaps I can see which specific file the phone is trying to load.
