Hi!

Everytime i disconnect the networkcable the pc loses the ip-address and says cable not connected (ipconfig). but i need an ip-address even the pc is not connected to the network because i have a database and a client running (both local) and this database needs a ip-address urgend. if i disconnect and connect later the database is going crazy. so is there anything to keep the ip without a connected cable? like editing the registry?

Kind regards,
Phantom

(Scratching head)Why do you keep disconnecting your server?

You could configure the client to use 127.0.0.1 - this is the loopback address for the local machine, and will work even with no network cable.

Alternatively, you could stop using DHCP and manually configure an IP address.

(Still Scratching head) Why on earth do you keep disconnecting your server? Marc Creviere

If you have a critical application or a server running it would be better for you to have a statically assigned IP address than to use DHCP, IMHO.

(Scratching FilthPig's head)wondering why you're disconnecting the cable too! J.R. Juiliano

Hello,

thanks for your fast reply. I have a system just for demonstration so the server and one client is on the same machine. If the machine is connected to the network it is needed that other clients can reach the server so the database needs a "true" ip address. But as I say - this is a demosystem and I travel around with that and I have to disconnect the cable :)). And there the is the problem. The statically assigned ip address does not longer exists and the database crashes. If I execute ipconfig the message "cable is not connected" is showed which is completely correct because I have disconnect it. On winnt4 the ip address does also exists even the cable is not connected. That is exactly what I need.
Is there any solution on win2k?

Thanks in advance,
Phantom

What kind of database are you using? Can you configure the client to use 127.0.0.1 as the database address? Marc Creviere

Hi Marc,

I'm using oracle. maybe there is an other problem with that.
If I install oracle without connected cable the database will never start correct WITH cableconnection. The database seems to be started correct but it is not! The same happends if I Install oracle with connected cable and start without connection. So I thought that the loss of the right ip address cause this error.
The ip 192.168.0.218 does not exists in win2k if the cable is not connected but in winnt it does and on winnt all works perfectly with or without a cableconnection.
Just try ipconfig on win2k and on winnt with and without cableconnection:

win2k
with: 192.168.0.218
without: cable not connected

on winnt the same procedure
with: 192.168.0.218
without: 192.168.0.218

The only Oracle I have any experience with is 7.3.4, but in whatever version you're using, if you use SQL Net Easy config (or something named very similar to that, not using my own system this morning so I can't say for sure what it's called) set up the database alias to point to the machine's name instead of an IP address.

127.0.0.1 is the loopback address. It's active even when no network connection is present (Ping it next time your network cable's out if you need verification). In your client config, do you have it connecting to 192.168.0.218 or do you use the machine name. If you use the machine name it should default to 127.0.0.1 when no network connection is present.

If that's not helpful, perhaps I've missed the true nature of the problem, and suggest that you contact oracle or use their online resources.

Hi Marc,

thanks for your help but that wasn't the problem :)
so I think I will call the oracle-developers. All the ip stuff is completely clear. The only thing I need (I think that is the problem)is the 192.168.0.218 without a cable connection like in winnt and not a "cable not connected" like in win2k. So the question is, exists anywhere a tweak that disables the detection if the cable is connected or not so that the ip is permanently 192.168.0.218 with and without cable connection. ... like in winnt ...

Phantom

Check out MS KB article Q239924, I think this has the answer ;-)

I have another idea if the knowledge base article doesn't help.

Install the microsoft loopback network adapter and give it an IP address, that will not complain when a cable is not connected!

Hi,

This is exactly what I need (Q239924). Thanks a lot!

Excellent help. I also needed to disable auto sense on dual NIC's, so this worked well. My question is, is there a way to disable the "Network Disconnected" icon on the taskbar when any NIC is not linked?

Thanks in advance
