I recently changed isp's and now when my router links up, get an ip address of the following:

64.146.226.xx
mask: 255.255.255.255
Gateway: 10.1.2.xx
dns: 64.146.171.130

First question: How is that subnet legal? I thought that is a broadcast mask?

Second question: I thought the gateway had to be on the same subnet as the ip address given out?

Thanks for any help here, it just kind of baffles me. My connection works fine, I just would like some clarification on this scheme. THanks

I believe that is ip spoofing (pretending) on a dialer interface. I'm guessing you have dsl and the dialer interface ip address is set to negotiate with ppp to your ISP's RADIUS or TACACS+ (probably RADIUS) server, and that server hand out your ip. It just needs something to "bind" to, kind of like a loopback interface is virtual, but needed in an OSPF environment to advertise. I could be wrong, but since nobody's replied to your post, I thought I would give it a go. Cheers.

That very well could be. I am using a fiber connection with PPPoE. Thanks for the info.
