I am trying to upgrade the IOS on a Cisco 2610XM router. But I try to connect to the tftp server I get the following error:" % Invalid input detected at the L on "copy tftp flash"
Right below it I also get
%IP_SNMP-3-SOCKET: can't open UDP socket
Unable to open socket on port 161"

What tftp server are your using? Can you ping the tftp server? Is the IOS image in the tftp server directory?

Have you got a firewall or access-list in place which may be blocking tftp?

I am using Solarwinds' TFTP server. The router is not in production yet. To upgrade the IOS I am using a small net work which consists of the router, a switch and a laptop. When I try to ping the laptop(tftp server) I get the following message:
"% Unrecognized host or address, or protocol not running."
If it helps, the router is running IOS Ver 12.2(10d). I do not mind wiping out everything on the router.

You have a problem at IP level. If you can not ping the tftp server, then there is not much chance of you transferring files between the two devices. I assume that you have assigned the router with the an IP address in the same IP range as the tftp server. Other things to check..

1. Check the IP stack on both devices. Can the devices ping their own IP addresses?
2. Is the switch configured for VLANs and perhaps you have connected them into different VLANs which prevents them from communicating.
3. Checked your network cable?
4. Is the router ethernet interface up and not in shutdown mode.

Once you get your IP connectivity going, then you can worry about the tftp process.
