IOS image names

I am getting ready to upgrade the IOS version on a Cisco 1750 router. The image name currently on the router has a DOS name, aaa1397.bin. The version I want to upgrade to has a UNIX name, c1700-o3sv3y56i-mz.121-3.T.bin.

Is there any difference between using the DOS and UNIX image names?

Should be no problem. The router will boot to the first valid image it finds, unless a config entry points it to a particular name in situations where the flash contains more thn one image. I like to keep the name as it comes from Cisco, c1700-o3sv3y56i-mz.121-3.T.bin in your case, as it helps me recognise the version, platform & type of image I am looking at.

There is no difference between the DOS and Unix Names except the name itself. If you look up the DOS Names on Ciscos Site you should see a table of names and it will have the correlating unix name next to it. And the badger is correct it will boot from the first good/valid IOS.

A Cisco rep wound up telling me that a lot of times the routers will ship with an image name that is DOS but that downloaded images always have an UNIX name.

Anyway, he said there is no problem using either.
