Hi

I would like to download IOS from Cisco router to my PC, over console.

Only over console!

Help please

Why over the console? You can do tftpdnld from rommon depending on the platform. Going at 9600 baud, it would take a few hours just for an 8MB IOS image. TFTPDNLD would take a matter of minutes, and I'd be glad to guide you through it.

here is how to do the TFTPDNLD Burt is talking about;

Have your TFTP software going (I personally use TFTPD32) and set your IP on the pc/laptop your using a static IP and use a crossover cable to connect to the ethernet port on your router. Still have the console cable connected as well so you are able to get into ROMMON.

Go into ROMMON mod

copy the below into notepad, make necessary changes and paste below into ROMMON

IP_ADDRESS=192.168.1.1
IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
DEFAULT_GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
TFTP_SERVER=<host ip address>
TFTP_FILE=<file name>

To start the download, type in the TFTPDNLD command

Dallas, Texas
Telecommunications
CCNA, Net+
Working on MCSA, Convergence+, CCVP

Don't forget the set command...

rommon1>set
rommon2>IP_ADDRESS=192.168.1.1
etc...
Important! The IP_ADDRESS and all other tftpdnld parameters MUST be entered with caps EXACTLY as DallasBPF has indicated! The "set" is in small letters!

I would like to get IOS file from the router. The XMODEM and the TFTPDNLD I can only download files to the router.

?? If the router has an IOS on it then why not connect a PC / laptop to it via ethernet, set up a port and download the IOS over TFTP?

Chris.

Hello,

I can’t use tftp because of MPLS VPN network.

My PC is in a MPLS VPN network, in the WORK VPN. In the router, wherefrom I would like to download the IOS, there are the WORK VPN and the MGMT (management) VPN.

I have the next problem, when I try to download IOS with TFTP:

- From my PC, I can ping the router
- I start a tftp server on my PC
- I enter the router over telnet
- From the router I can’t ping my PC, only with the next extended command: ping vrf work 10.4.104.39. Therefore the command copy non – usable.

- When I write the command copy flash: tftp: , and I give ip address of my PC (10.4.104.39), I get a error massage:

Error opening tftp://10.4.104.39/c7600s3223-advipservicesk9-mz.122-33.SRB1.bin
(Timed out)

The only possibility is download over console. But whereby??

I've never heard of anyone trying to download a file *from* a router over the console. Is there even a command to do that? The tftpdnld command is for downloading images *to* the router, not from it, right?

Hello Jneiberger
You are right!!!I think most of us misread the post ;-(
So Szjozsee the simplest way would be to hook-up a Laptop with a crossover cable to the Router and download the image with a TFTP Server.
Regards

If you are on a remote network and not even physically connected to that router, how exactly were you planning to do it over a console cable? If you are close enough to attach a console cable, then you are close enough to patch lead into the ethernet port and do it properly.

Hallo everybody!

I can connect to router over console cable.
With HyperTerminal, Can I get IOS file from the router?

Hello
Read my last post.Hook-up a PC to the ethernet port and place it on the same subnet.Then download the IOS via tftp server.
You can only upload IOS to router via console.And not the contrary.
Regards

You can get the IOS file from the router to a pc with
router#copy flash tftp

That is the only way to copy the file from the router to a pc. But you must have a route to that pc!

XModem and TFTPDNLD are for copying an IOS TO the router ONLY!

Burt

szjozsee,

You cannot download the IOS from the router to a PC through the console port. It simply can't be done.

I'm curious why the copy flash tftp command failed.
If he can ping and telnet to the router, obviously routing is working properly.
Could it be something as simple as the windows firewall blocking the tftp connection?
Just wondering...
