Hello,

I have recently come across a problem that really has me confused. Here are the Specs on the system:

Dell C600 Laptop
Bios Version A22
Windows 2000 SP2
Novell Client 4.83.2 Sp1
Zenworks

A few days ago the user brought the Laptop to us stating he was getting an Unplug/Eject Hardware error. So I booted up the Laptop with the CD rom in the Modular Bay and the Floppy on the paralel cable. It took the error about 7 min. to pop up. About 60 of them... one right after the other. The device manager showed two floppies installed and the cdrom. I removed the hardware using Add/Remove hardware. Re-booted the Laptop. Right after the Post I recieved an error, but I don't recall what is was. Something about drive0. When Win2k loaded and I logged in. The hardware re-installed Properly. Error came back. With only one device listed. I stopped the device in Unplug/Eject hardware. Plugged it back in to make sure device came back. It did. And was in the list of available drives. Called Dell support. We went through 2 hrs of trouble shooting with different configs and drives. Reset BIOS. ect,ect...To make a long story short. It appeared to work correctly for about three days. the error came back. And Dell replaced the Motherboard.
Now this is what I have. No errors. And No drive available in Win2k. Ohh.. the drive is there. You can boot to it from a Dos/Win95/Win98 boot disk. It shows in BIOS no matter how it is connected: Cable or Bay. It is there in Device manager, the proper Services are running. And it is there in the unplug/eject hardware. Dell Diagnostics Checks out fine.

But it is not available in Command, CMD, Disk Admin, My Computer. The device is just not there in the OS.

Why? Oh why? Can someone please offer some advice? I have not seached through the registry yet. I will try to do this first thing this AM. But after that. GHOST!!

Thanks,
Joe

Have you tried pressing Ctrl Alt and 'D' (the letter) on start up, this will run built in dell diags on your HDD. In my experience , keep at dell till you get a result, you can waste a lot of time trouble shooting this sort of problem and invariably end up back with the manufacturer

Run regedit.
Go to: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325- 11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Look in the right pane for any one or both of the following value names. UpperFilters, or LowerFilters
If either or both of these values exist, right click on the value name (UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters) and select Delete.
These values aren't needed anyway.
