A few questions need to be answered by you before a meaningful answer can be given:

1) What version of VMS are you running?
2) What command did you use to put the data on the tape?
3) What command did you use to try to restore the data?
4) What is the EXACT error message?

Please don't post in ALL CAPS.

Ken

1) What version of VMS are you running?
ans: OpenVms 6.2
2) What command did you use to put the data on the tape?
ans: backup/lo/list=apr0604 *.* mka0:file-0604.bck/save_Set/label=pesco
(backup taken at some location A)
3) What command did you use to try to restore the data?
ans: backup/lo/label=pesco mka500:*.*/sav []*.*;
(backup tried to be restored at some location B)
4) What is the EXACT error message?
ans: %BACKUP-F-LABELERR, Error in tape label processing on MKA500:[000000]*.*;
-BACKUP-F-NOTANSI, Tape is not valid ANSI format

please note that mka0: and mka500 are DAT drives of type TLZ

If different tape drives are being used, it may be
a density problem. Check to make sure the drives
use the same density.

On the original drive (assuming it's availible), try a "backup/list/rew" to list the header info.

Some other things to try:

1) If you mounted the tape, dismount it "/nounload", and let Backup mount it for you.

2) Mount the tape "/over=id" and see whether the system tells you what the label is.

3) On your backup command use the qualifiers "/ignore=label/rewind" to ignore any labels and to make sure you're at the beginning of the tape.

it's been a long time, but I think you can specify the density for the restore and/or backup if they're different media, or if they've been backed up on (even slightly) different media.

It used to "sometimes" make a difference.

Don't have VMS box anymore ... :-(, or the reference set :-( :-(

As I said it's been a long time, if this is of no relevance ask mods to delete.
