had to replace the hard disk. followed the book step by step to reinstall the software, but i keep hitting the same wall. following checklist d3, i'm supposed to install the unixware, done, then intunix+e update package, mine was intunix+m so i installed it, then audix software. but the item it refers to was already installed at the end of the unixware installation, when it said to install the intuity image tape. so, i move on to the swin tape, in this case serial inband for mode code, and it will not install. all tapes are new and so is the drive. i've been an avaya tech since the early 90's, and so this should be a piece of cake. i've followed the steps twice now, and yet i keep hitting this wall. i seem to recall that there was something that avaya had to do to correct some software installation problem. i'm thinking back to the early 2000's when the system in question was still fairly new. is anyone aware of a corrected list or sequence to be used when installing software in this 4.3-4, 6 port, 30 hour, mode code, with lodging? they don't even have a pms system. really vanilla. any help would be most appreciated. thanks from canada, eh?

could be one or 2 things:

If you already have the "mode code" integration, remove that 1st.

also, in the past, I have had to have AVAYA dial in and enable something, for the SWIN integration to work. They used to charge $5,000 to turn it up, so you will need the sold to # to convice them you already had it.

thanks to you both. i've been through the same process twice now, and it does read all tapes. step by step i have followed the process, but it always stops when i load the swin tape for serial inband. i believe the message is "cannot unpack data stream" or something like that. we can however view the directory of what's on the tape. i'm beginning to think that it's game over for this one, which is really frustrating because i know there's nothing wrong with this thing now that it has a new hard disk. i read through the supplement there, and the routine is the same. i was hoping that some step was out of place in the maintenance manual dated 1997, but i see now that there's no difference. i wonder if i should just continue the installation, bypassing the swin install, and then try it later when the backup has been restored, as it may have some license or permission or whatever that must have been granted by avaya 10 years ago, as i too recall that avaya had to dial in to do something before you could get mode code working. thanks again for your help mates.

It sounds like your "SWIN" tape is bad, missing or corrupted files. The tape should install,if it doesn't, then the tape is bad. I have seen it happen with new out of box software tapes. Try to locate another tape, somewhere.
There is a setting that must be changed under the TSC login for a "new" install to work correctly, but if you have a good valid backup it should be restored to service from the "backup".

i thought the swin might be bad too, but someone who knows unix well enough to look at a file directory was able to view all the files on that tape, suggesting, though not ensuring that it's ok. since the hard disk is new and blank, do i not have to reload all software before i can do a restore? at least, that's what i'm reading in the docs. i'm assuming that the backups only backup customer data, not all the files and programs. could i actually just load a backup and have everything return to normal? if that's the case, that would solve my problem of course, although i've not read that that can be done. i did the "low level format" in the scsi utilities as required under the software reload instructions, and also the disk surface test. both were no problem of course. most perplexing.

one last update. the cust is a comfort inn just outside toronto, and so they also have lodging on this thing, though that doesn't make any difference at this point as i can't get to that step of software installation. it went down dec 31. they had a maint aggreement on the pbx and dig sets, but not the vm. this thing has been chugging away since 1999. amazing. they've been patient about getting it going again as they would not like to put big bucks into a replacement, and they understand the the software issue has been holding things up, as it's old and no longer supported. as they've been waiting so long and there seems to be no quick solution, it's looking like it's time to propose a duvoice system to replace that old intuity. damned shame. makes salespeople happy, but you and i know there's a fix for this thing somewhere, and fixing things is what we do. feels like we've been defeated when we can't get things going again. oh well. we tried.

If you have followed the book for the load and the tape won't load, then that tape is bad or the previous tape corrupted something. I have built/re-built too many 4.x and 5.x Intuity's to believe anything different.
Your LL format and scan is the best procedure there is.
Unfortunately, one of the few things I don't have is the Lodging and PMS tapes for the 4.x machines.
When you build a machine, you have to install all the software required and the backup restores the system and customer data for return to service. It will not reinstall missing software.

thanks so much for everyone's help. i'll have to say goodbye to this old system as i just can't have them down any longer, or put any more time into restoring this one. take care friends.
