Hi all

I've recently set up my first Windows 2000 server, everything seemed to be working well except for the internet connection sharing.

When I share the connection, it changes the IP of the server (from 10.10.1.1, to 192.168.0.1), but it doesnt change the clients on the same network, obviously this causes problems.

I did try using software such as WinProxy before but this made the system worse, resulting in me having to format and reinstall all software.

My question is, how can I share the internet connection simply, I know little about IP ranges, or things like that, I'm just trying to share a dial-up connection.

Could anyone explain this to me

Thanks very much

Daint

If you want to use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on your server you should start by disabling DHCP. This is because ICS does 2 things:-
1 It gives the machine with the internet connection an ip address of 192.168.0.1 and..
2 It dynamically allocates ip addresses to clients in the 192.168.0.x range
The second feature means you need to set the clients up to receive their ip addresses etc dynamically.

Hope this helps

If you can get your hands on a copy of Microsoft ISA Server that works very well. It has far better features than ICS including firewall (all be it a very simple one) caching (very handy) and security requirements when accessing the net (i.e prompts you to enter a userid and password before you can access the internet)

If you do get a copy, make sure you service pack it before you start using it....

yes, i know its a Windows Forum but...
there are several Router softs out there that are very user friendly and can run on old and slow systems. I just know a german example of a one disk router, sorry for that
but there are many out there.
