Hi Fellas, I need help with the following problem. I am unable to get the internet sharing working between 2 computers running win xp pro.
The situation is as follows:
1.The computers are connected direct by a patch cable.
2.The primary computer is using a 128k isdn modem to connect to the internet and everything seems to work ok.
3. I have had the second computer connected to another network (via a hub) and was able to connect to the internet through the primary computer on that network. For that reason I am discounting that computer as being the problem.
4. The icon for the local network connection is on each computer.
5. On the primary computer "My network places" is not shown on the start button. Also if I click on "My network places" in explorer it is empty.
6. If I open networks in control panel it shows the internet and local area network icons.
7. I am able to share data between each computer.
8. When I run the ICS wizard it completes each part of the wizard except the last section. The computer hasn't frozen.
9. Each NIC is visable and both have an assigned ip. I can ping each ip from both computers and get returns.

I don't know what other information I can give, my friends computer is in another town (30klms away) so I print out any answers and try them when I get to his place tomorrow.

Thanks for your time,

Ockerb

If the computers are connected directly to each other, I think you should be using a crossover cable between them instead of a straight-through cable.

Here's a guide on how to make your own crossover cable.

Thanks cydud3, I did mention that I was using a patch (crossover) cable, but thanks for your efforts anyway :)

Start, Run, net stop spooler
Run the ICS wizard again.
Start, Run, net start spooler

I'm sorry...I'm used to patch cables being straight-through. I dealt with patch cables in the context of hubs and patch panels. [blush]

Thanks Bill, is there other ideas you might have as well or do you think that will resolve the ICS problem. Its a long way to travel for such a small typing exercise :)

Hey cydud3, i'll never knock anyone that is trying to help, thanks for your time mate :)

cydud3,
I too view a "patch" cable as straight-through pinned.
But ockerb did note: "7. I am able to share data between each computer."

Thanks Bill
You have helped me out on other occasions as well, you and some of the other regulars dedicate a lot of your time in your efforts to help the windows plebs out. Thanks for your efforts and happy new year to you and all the Tek Tips crowd. :)

ockerb,

How very kind of you.
Best Holiday wishes.

make sure your firewall on the second PC is off. And the firewall for the workgroup on the first PC is off.

Hi fellas
Me again, I still haven't resolved my internet sharing problem. One important observation I have made is there is nothing in the "my network places" on the start menu. This is the case on the computer that connects to the internet directly. I am thinking that somewhere I should be able to see the shared drives or folders for this computer and I thought they should be in here. They are indicated clearly on the client computer in "my network places".
If I "view the workgroup computers" on the primary computer it opens the "MSHOME GROUP" and I can see both computers and am able to double click each computer and view all the folders.

Bill
Thanks to your suggestion I have been able to complete the ICS wizard but unfortunately this has not enabled the internet sharing.

Hi Fellas
Just wondering if some of the whips can have another crack at this one and think of some other ideas I might be able to try
Thanks in advance
Ockerb
