Internet running slow on new comp..through router..other comps fine..?

I just hooked a new computer up to a network that was already running in my home. I have 3 computers all running to a Linksys router for internet connectivity. This new computer for some reason runs the internet VERY slow when the other computers are turned on. Once those computers are turned off, My new comp. runs very fast on the internet. Pages that usually take minutes to load pop up in seconds once these computers are turned off.

I am running IE6, WinXP, and have DSL internet connection. I think the problem may be something to due with the network to the other computers that XP automatically set up.

Any ideas on why this ONE computer would run slower than the other two when they are all going to the same router? What has me stumped is that once the other comps are off the internet runs great. This computer is the only one running the internet slow.

My ISP said that i can run up to 4 comps through their service using a router like mine. I can't figure out what the deal is.

Uhg - you used the network setup wizard in xp. For some reason, this sometimes causes problems. First, what are the other 2 operating systems? Do you have XP's guest account turned on? Do you have any filesharing enabled on the network? Also, does only one of the other computers cause this, or does it have to be both.

ok let me see if I can answer all of your questions. One of the computers is using XP the other using 98. These computers are REALLY fast surfing the net. My new one is slow and even sometimes loses the internet connection all together. When I first hooked my new comp up to the router I couldn't establish an internet connection for my LIFE! After REPEATEDLY hitting "release" and "renew" it finally connected me. It runs slow as long as EITHER of the computers is on, and I still am losing my internet connection from my new comp. I am on one of my other comps as we speak because the new one has no connection whatsoever. When I run "repair" on the LAN connection from it I get an error saying something along the lines of "Could not complete repair...could not renew IP."

On the new comp there are NO guest Accounts turned on or activated.

I have filesharing enabled on all three comps through the "shared folder" on each comp.

Another thing. If you know anything about the linksys router, you will know that there are lights for each port labeled "link/act" "full/col" and "100." Well, when I first plugged in the cable from my new comp into the router I noticed that it was the only one that had the "link/act" light blinking CONSTANTLY. IT NEVER STOPS!

I think there is something wrong big time with how XP set up the network...especially on my new comp.

Another thing I thought I would add. It isn't only the internet running slow on my new comp. Whenever I try to, for instance, send something from the new comp to a printer on another comp, it doesn't work and it takes what seems like an ETERNITY just to get an error.

Based on what you've posted, I would say you have a bad cable if it wasn't for the part about it working when the others are off. It might be worth a check to swap cables anyway. A couple of other possible cabling issues are interference from florescent lights and running parallel to electrical supply wiring.

If no cabling problems exist, there's something going on with your computer. On the linky, the link/act led serves 2 purposes. If a network connection is established (link) the light should remain constantly on. If you're doing something (activity) through the network, it should blink. Therfore, you're either losing & regaining the link or your computer is causing way too much activity. If all the cabling is ok, make sure your virus scanning software is up to date and scan. Then find some trojan scanning software and scan again.

PROBLEM SOLVED!! I got to playing around with the router. Turns out it was something to do with me using the port #1 on the router. Why would that make a difference? I now remember reading something about not using it if you don't have to, but why bother putting a port #1 on the router then? Anybody know because I sure don't.

It shouldn't matter which lan port on the router that you're connected to. The computer I'm using right now is on port 1 of a BEFSR41, which I'm guessing is what you have.
