Hey,

I've got an HP laserjet 3100 printer on a windows 2000 machine.

It by default uses a virtual port and not the standard lpt1.
terminal services detects lpt1 and redirects automaticly. However i cannot print to this printer directly because it uses the virtual port.

I'm thinking if i can print to an internet address //ip.here.x.x/printername i can just add it over the internet. I don't know how to make a printer available via internet .. i try to print to the printer ip/name now and it says access denied...

any ideas?

publish the printer in AD, then share the printer under properties in the printer folder. that will give access over the internet.

Hope this helps,

Corie

Thanks,

I ended up just swapping the 3100 for the other 3150 we have, and that one works on TS just fine.

But i'll keep that in mind for future

What is TS? What is AD?
If you put your printer on the internet, can anyone access it? I guess I'd have to know your printer's IP to send a job to it, mind you. Is there any security you can use?

usually the printer software has a password ...
u can secure yourself by putting it..
or put it behind a firewall , and control the access..

read up on "comand line" NET USE /?
add printer to use LPT1.

NET USE LPT1 //SERVER/000.000.00.000(PRINTER ID) /PERSISTENT YES

i'll check that out, but i was able to change the printer to lpt1 without command line .. it just wouldn't print.
