One user came to me regarding his friend's home computer. The parents suspect that its the 14 year old daughter that is going to any and all websites and downloading a bunch of crap, installing it and then the user (who is also tek-savvy) goes to the house and after many trial and errors has to reinstall everything.
I.e. the last he said was to the point that he couldn't open up any programs, even while being in safe mode.

My point is though, can someone, anyone recommend a good $20 piece of software that tracks user activity and possibly sends it through email? The parents want to nail down who exactly is doing what and where of the household.

Why not just restrict the user account so she can't install software?

If they're using IE, they could start with an index.dat reader like this one. This information is retained even if browsing history and cache are deleted. I don't know of a good activity monitor. I'm sure someone else can help there. One thought is that maybe one of the firewalls out there has a browsing log feature?

Well he is making a change in the security as one flaw was the parents were set up as administrators, but the daughter would ask for the password, they'd cave in and she would then log in as administrator.

He's settings himself up as the admin (the user is engaged to one of the other daughters).

I did suggest to him Mandiant Web Historian...but warned that if anyone deletes the cookies, then the Historian comes back with nothing.

I have also introduced him to Norton Internet Security, which as the firewall, Intrusion Detection, Antispyware, AV, administrator account to the software and is user friendly. I saw that one of the local retailers has it for $10 after rebates.

Perfect Key Logger Lite(FREE) has been useful for me to see what my nephews have been up to on our PC when they come to visit. Hides itself well and tracks everything! Easy to view log.

LadySlinger,
I didn't check out MasterRacker's link, but there is also a vbscript that someone named Vengy created. Here is a link to the FAQ.

faq779-6302

It does miss some stuff, but for the most part catches every site that is hit.

Use a sneeky key logger. Can't remember the one I've used before but there's a freebie / lite edition and is hidden very, very well. (no process listed, no app listed and not in add/remove)

Google for a few free ones and see if any of them meet your needs.
