This is my set-up (Windows NT 4.0 Server Service Pack 6) running (Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 3). I have reinstalled Exchange Server and STILL CAN NOT GET THE (Internet Mail Service) (IMS) to run. It gives me a error like

COULD NOT START THE MICROSOFT EXCHANGE INTERNET MAIL SERVICE ON \\SRNM1
ERROR: 2140: an internal windows error occurred

I have reinstalled some DNS services and other things IF someone could please help me out I WOULD BE GREATEFUL

When you reinstalled exchange, did you first remove it, and also remove the \exchsrvr directory? If not, I've seen some cases where even after removing the software, the directory is left intact, and whatever's out there now that is preventing IMC from starting might be still left behind.

I would also check to see if there's any other kind of SMTP service running as well. You can check this my trying to telnet to your exchange server on port 25.
