Is it possible to allow users to log on to the server using the internet?

ArchonSoft,

Thats a pretty broad question. You dont mean Intranet (as in corporate network) do you? If you do yes you can.

If you mean over the "internet" I would have to say there is a way to log on to a server over the internet if everything is open to it (wouldnt suggest this) and you know the IP address of the server you wish to connect to, but you would only want to allow certain services only not open up a Domain Controller to the internet that is non protected.

What I want to do is to allow users to access their disk space om the server. For exemple: I want to access the folder name Archonsoft from my home, same for each user.

ArchonSoft,

When you are dealing with home computers and corporate networks there are two routes that are commonly used - VPN and RAS. This connects the computer from home to the network in question, by which you can then log on to the network (if the home computer is set up with proper networking configurations) and you should be good to go. However if you dont have a VPN concentrator nor the ability to do so the only real viable option would be dial up access. This is another vulnerability however not everyone on the internet is probing your corporate network.

I would suggest talking to your Network Administrator and Network Engineer (server admin / router network admin - could be same person like me lol) and ask them what is currently in place for remote connections for people that travel ect. If dialup is in place it will be slower than VPN connection through the internet but is usually the most cost effective.

Hope this helps you go in the right direction.

how can i configure VPN, we have cisco firewall that allow vpn but I don't know about it...

Are you the one maintaining this vpn? First and foremost make certain from the network prospective you arent breaking any policies set in place. When you get the go ahead do the following.

Prior to going home get the IP address of where your User directory is (usually PDC or NAS)and the share name (ie PDC\Users\archonsoft\). To get ip address ping the server name and it will resolve to ip address.

On your home computer you need to enable network settings (depending on OS) to allow Microsoft Networking. Then you can do the following = start-run-open- & in the open area type in \\10.0.0.1\Users\archonsoft\ click open and it should prompt you for a username and password. Enter it in and you should have a folder open up (which is the share).

That should allow you to access files after you authenticate to the server. The reason I suggest the ip address is so you do not have to worry about name resolution from the vpn concentrator.
