All of a sudden, my IE5 started showing a message box saying something like:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, please contact the program vendor". IE then shut down immediately, with no internet access possible.

I uninstalled IE5 and installed IE6 in its place, but this is also sick. It puts up the same message, but in this case, I can close the message box and keep IE6 running. Instead, a new box opens, looking quite legit, which says "There is a problem with Internet Explorer and it may have to shut down.." It goes on to a blurb about clicking here to see what's wrong, and gives two buttons; "Send Report" and "Don't Send".

If I do neither, and drag the box out of sight, I can continue surfing, but at about 3-4Kps speed!

If I click Send Report, a convincing-looking graphic appears, followed by a successful transmit report, IE6 closes down and restarts in a new window, and the whole rigmarole starts again!

If I click Don't Send, IE6 closes down abruptly, and my PC freezes solid. Nothing works. Not even Ctrl-Alt-Del. The only way to recover is by switching off and on at the mains.

AM I INFECTED? WHAT WITH? HOW CAN I CURE MYSELF?

Hi,
This error reporting is a "new" item that microsoft has added into some of its products. Basically you IE6 is experiencing the same type of problem that your IE5 was but you are getting prompted to send the details to microsoft.
Frankly sending the details dont get a technician on the phone to you within an hour to solve the problem so I dont exactly know what they do with all the error reports they receive.
Its perfectly normal-tha baove behavior.
Lets get back to whats not normal-IE shutting down.
Does the issue occur totally randomly or on certain webpages?
Are you running an antivirus and what type of connection to the net are you using?
