I'm working on a PC with XP that the enduser uses for home transcription. She recently started with a new company that downloaded transcription software and "Mikogo"(remote access software) on her pc. She was working fine for three days and then all of the sudden, when she clicks on IE, it doesn't open. There is an internet connection, because her Yahoo Messenger connects and her transcription software connects to the internet. I uninstalled IE and re -installed IE7. IE7 will come up for a few seconds and then close itself. Any ideas?

Maybe some addon causing a conflict? Have you tried running IE witohut ay addons or extensions loaded? Start-> Run: iexplore.exe -extoff

Any clues in Event Viewer?

Does it work in Safe Mode (with Networking)

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

I haven't tried safe mode yet. I downloaded a fresh copy of IE7 and haven't added any add ons, but i will try it. Thanks

Have you checked for Malware too?

I see lots of recommendations here for programs like -

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

SuperAntispyware

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Have you tried another User from "Safe Mode with Networking", or from Normal Mode?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

What anti-virus/firewall software is installed?
