I have a system running windows XP home. When Internet Explorer starts the default web site is loaded with out a problem. However when another website (any web site) is loaded Internet Explorer crashes. I have gone into add/remove software and uninstalled Internet Explorer. However their is still a folder or Internet Explorer in the Programs folder. When I try to reinstall Internet Explorer 6.0??? I get and that a newer version of IE already exists and setup cannot continue.

Should I search the registry and delete all entries for IE and then reinstall or does somebody have a better solution?

Can you explain what you did in Add or Remove? Did you perhaps remove a Hotfix for IE mistakenly believing you were removing IE?

293907 - How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6

You use Add/Remove programs in Control Panel in relation to IE via Add/Remove Windows Components.

Uncheck the entry for Internet Explorer. Press Next. This will remove all IE and Outlook Express icons only (not the program). Repeat the process, this time reselect and check Internet Explorer. Press Next. This will restore fresh icons that were previously removed. This option only repairs icons and shortcuts of IE and Outlook Express and does not remove either program from your system.

If you want to repair IE try these.

You can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

(where c: is your Windows drive).

You will need to have your XP CD available. If you re-install remember to update it.

Using SFC /Scannow at the command prompt will help in repairing IE.

Before attempting the repair try some of the options in these articles.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q318378)

Thanks Linney for the help. However I still have the orginal problem. When Internet Explorer is loaded the default site comes up completly with no problem. I have run Windows update with no problem. The problem is when I goto another site does not matter which one of the millions of them out their. I get error window after error window with the title Internet Explorer and a description of Unspecified Error.

Adventually Internet Explorer will close itself. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

Thank You

If you followed all of the above suggestions, try this FAQ in case it is Spyware or Virus problems.

After that you may be looking at this.

You could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Ok. I have run Norton Anti-Virus, and the freedom online virus scanner. Both said system was virus free. Although Norton Anti-Virus did remove some Adware software Topmoxie.

I ran the CWShredder, Spybot, and Ad-Ware. Between Norton, Spybot and AD-Ware 20 different items were removed weather registry entries or files. LSPfix was run, as well as Winsock was run. I even ran XP network connection (right click on connection and click repair) repair all to no success.

When I first got the system all critical updates were installed, all though the recommend windows updates were not, their was also one driver download not installed, and the lan connection was firewalled. They are running Stopzilla to stop pop ups. Norton Anti-Virus was upto date with 1-21-04 updates, I did update them to 1-23-04 before scanning. Norton Auto protect was also running when I received the system.

I have run hijack this on the system and have saved the log and will post when someone request me to.

Ok.
Post it please.

Disable Stopzilla, then try changing web pages.
Any change?

And leave it single spaced.
I appreciate the thought, but it is much harder to read.

I second that...
I thought my eyes were going when I first looked at it.

Use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, to remove Limewire, or live with the advertisements it creates.

bcastner,

What is limewire, I was wandering if this had anything to do with the problem? I never heard of it.

I appreciate all the help that everybody has given me with this problem...heck all my post!! I have a policy never give up on a problem until every possible solution has been exhausted. However before I was able to carry that out with this problem I had to return the system to the customer. Like bcastner, we currently have about 8 inches of snow on the ground and more supposedly on the way. My customer wanted her computer back so that she could work from home. I installed netscape 7.1 on the system and it works fine. If I have this system come back for anything else I will let everybody know what came of the situation.

Once again I really appreciated everybodys help!!! Hopefully one day I can return the favor!!!
