Hi all:

I installed Win98se on a formatted HDD. I did most of the MSFT critical updates, including Internet Explorer. Everything was running fine, then about a week later, I started to get pop-ups that wont close (either by using the X button or right-clicking on the bottom taskbar window thats open) as well as the main page of Internet Explorer. I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and End-Task all of IE's open windows. This is the first time ever that I've encountered this.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Tnx in advance,

Mikey

I suspect you have spyware. I recommend downloading and then updating spybot

Spybot may appear to freeze when updating, just be patient.

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Matt J:

Tnx for the info...I'll give it a shot. I already have Ad-Aware in the system & have done several scans for spyware. Maybe Spybot will catch somemore.

Tnx in advance,

Mikey

You could probably use a good popup blocker as well as SpyBot S&D, such as the free google bar,

For IE...you can go here;
Start >> Run REGEDIT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults

add these two Dwords;
about=00000004
about:=00000004

Voila!

I had a similar problem that turned out to be a version of a “CoolWebSearch” virus/trojan

CoolWebSearch “tools” are a range of different browser hijackers. Cool web search and their variants are very different in code, but their final result it the same. They all redirect users to a given web site and other sites and redefines the home page. CoolWebSearch exists in the many variant forms. Many also affect core windows functions, search and explorer capabilities may be affected.

My up to date Norton could not pick up anything, the only way I could get rid of this little nasty was to install CWShredder.
