Internet DNS Cache on switch network

Hello everyone,

Heres my problem.

Here at the office we have a network or 2 pc's connected through a 8 port switch. The network works fine for file and print sharing but we have a problem with the internet sharing.
We have 1 computer connection directly to the internet and the other computer sharing the internet through a proxy set-up automatically by Internet Explorer.
After both computers using the internet for about 3 hours, the slave computer sharing the internet, losses its internet sharing over the network. It comes up with a error page not found page. We use Windows 2000. I had a look at the Event viewer that stated the following:
"The DNS Client service could not contact any DNS servers for a repeated number of attempts. For the next 30 seconds the DNS Client service will not use the network to avoid further network performance problems. It will resume its normal behavior after that. If this problem persists, verify your TCP/IP configuration, specifically check that you have a preferred (and possibly an alternate) DNS server configured. If the problem continues, verify network conditions to these DNS servers or contact your network administrator."

I think this means that the DNS Cache has filled up.
How would I go about clearing it or stopping this from happening in the future?

If i restart the master computer, the internet sharing then works fine but I would prefer not to have to restart the computer every 2 to 3 hours.

Thank-you anyone who replies to this topic.

Rupert,

Why are you accessing the internet through the one pc only? Can the other pc go to the internet via the internet connection?

I know what I know and that's all I know.

I have one computer with a physical connection to the internet with other computers connected through the network on a proxy set up. This allows internet sharing accross the other machines. After about 3 hours of browsing, all the computers cant browse the net because the dns cache is full but the computer with the physical connection to the internet, still browses fine.

thanks for the reply, all help is much appreciated.

How is it physically connected to the internet...cable, DSL, dial-up?

yes sorry i should have mentioned it before,

I have the computer connected to the inter through a idsn connection. A pci isdn card which is connected to the connection on the wall socket.

thanks

PCI ISDN? Wow. You are not in the US are you.

So, your PC is acting as the router/gateway to the internet. I can't tell you are having the problems you have; but I can suggest something. Do you need to have the proxy service running? If not, have the internet pc just provide gateway/router services and not proxy. Configure the other pc to use the ISP DNS and the internet pc as the Default Gateway. I am just assuming you can do this. You may need a NAT program.

Using DHCP? For a quick fix, write a quick batch file.

Ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /renew

Name it ip.bat and when you lose your connection, run it. Any more info would help. Good luck.
