On our network only 2 of us use the ISDN line to connect to the internet (others use their own modem) but even when neither of us are trying to access the internet it keeps dialling up then staying online for hours. I've set it to disconnect when idle and not redial but something, somewhere on our network is causing it to keep dialling up and then maintain the connection. What could it be thats causing it to do this? Can anyone help?

I fear I will soon throw it out into the car park.

Are you using LAN modem for that ISDN connection? If so, there are some configuration that need to be done, look for the dial up number of the both channel A and channel B line. There must have been set to same number, so it has caused the problem. Try to give different number for each of the channel, it helps.

I had a similar problem last year.
I found eventually found that it was a particular program that was keeping the connection open.

So it may be worth looking at the pieces of software you have on the proxy server.

Hope this may help you on your way

what type of server do you have? does it have DNS?

are your workstations querying it or are they querying an ISP instead? if so what is their TTL?

I've seen it before
