I am running Win98, after installing AOL "SUCKS" 7.0 my customers computer will not connect to the internet. No ping, no web sites, can use AOL e-mail, IM, chat, all other AOL functions but cannot browse the web. Last customer I needed to format the hard drive and reinstall from nnothing, trying not to DO that this time. Please help.

You probably allowed AOL to be the default program which it will ask you after the install finishes.

In IE, go to Tools->Internet Options->Programs and tick the box that says "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it's the default".

Hit OK, close and reopen IE. If that doesn't work, you may need to uninstall AOL, reboot, and reinstall. This time, pay close attention to every question that comes up on the screen during the install. Do not let AOL be the default for anything...

I have done all that, even uninstalled dial up networking and reinstalled it. Removed everything that said AOL, and still no go.

If this PC is able to connect to AOL, get email, etc. but not reach (or ping) any other external sites, the problem may also be on AOL's side. They have limited web access during peak periods. Have you confirmed the problem isn't on their end?

Is there any firewall software installed (i.e. Zonealarm, Norton Security, etc)? If so, make sure AOL is given full access.

When you can't ping, there is either an improper setting in TCP/IP or something is blocking it. Try pinging IP addresses as well as Host Names.

If that's not it, all I can suggest is to blow out the entire Network Stack (TCP/IP, Client for MS Networks, etc) after uninstalling AOL, reboot, then reinstall AOL.

Hope that helps,

I have done all that, AOL is no longer installed, trying to connect using a Bellsouth account dial up account, same problem. Also tried a local ISP with the same problem.

Talson,

I think you are missing one important point here. When you install AOL and give it full control over your pc, uninstalling it and blowing out network adapters and protocols doesn't always resolve the problem.

The best way is to suck it up and walk through the reinstallatin of AOL. Any AOL tech rep will tell you that certain registry/file settings are modified to prevent Dial-Up Networking from working alongside (hence other ISP's that use it). Once you tell AOL that it is the default, you've signed your death warrant! LOL

Even if you don't want AOL anymore, still reinstall it so that you can turn off this "default" function. Make sure other ISP's have access, then do what you want with AOL...

When I got my rockwell modem, I had all the programs and directions for it. after a few years I lost them and in the mean time my computer crashed. Now after I reformated my computer, I need to get on AOL but it cant locate my modem. what should I do

Might try going to Dial Up Networking & check settings on your Server Types Tab. Is your "Check Type Of Dial Up Server" option correct? Should be "PPP: Internet,Windows NT Server, Windows 98" The click TCP/IP Settings tab & make sure "Log On To Net" , "Enable Compression" & "TCP/IP" boxes are checked.
